Windows Applications and Utilities
The following list of software applications contains programs and utilities helpful for Windows users. The list is provided by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) as a recommendation only. DoIT is not responsible for content on/from vendor Web sites.
McAfee's Anti-Virus Software
A free copy of McAfee's Anti-Virus software is available for all students, staff and faculty at SF State. For further information on this program please visit SF State's McAfee page.
Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot Search and Destroy, created by Safer-Networking, is used to detect and remove spyware from a computer.
SUPERAntiSpyware
SUPERAntiSpyware is a detection and removal utility for removing Spyware, Adware, Malware, Trojans, Dialers, Worms, KeyLoggers, HiJackers, Parasites, Rootkits, Rogue Security Products and many other types of threats. It is available as a standard executable and in a portable version that can run off of a thumb drive (for infections that block software installations).
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware tool provides runtime detection and removal of malware. This software is available free for home/personal use but is not free for university-owned machines.
Microsoft Safety Scanner
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a one-time tool for removing malicious software. Each download expires 10 days after being downloaded. To run a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download the software again.
PuTTY SSH Client
PuTTY provides secure terminal connections using the SSH protocol. SSH is a secure alternative to Telnet. Please read the PuTTY Setup Guide for instructions on setting up and using the client.
FileZilla
FileZilla is a powerful SFTP client for both Windows and Mac. It has been designed for ease of use and with support for as many features as possible, while still being fast and reliable.
Connection Settings:
- Server: apollo.sfsu.edu (individual accounts), unixlabs.sfsu.edu (applications), or www.sfsu.edu (departmental accounts)
- Username: your account name (e.g., if your email address is janedoe@sfsu.edu, type janedoe)
- Password: your SF State password
- Port: 22

Apple iTunes / Quicktime
iTunes and Quicktime provide video and audio playback for many file types.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Reader software is the global standard for electronic document sharing. Use Adobe Reader to view, search, digitally sign, verify, print, and collaborate on PDF files.
Adobe Flash Player
Adobe Flash is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to Web pages.
Mozilla Firefox / Thunderbird
Mozilla Firefox is a popular web browser that is generally more secure and less prone to spyware than other browsers. Mozilla Thunderbird is a free e-mail client that SF State supports for Faculty and Staff e-mail.
IrfanView
IrfanView is a freeware (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer and editor for Windows.
Winmail Opener
Winmail Opener by EOLSOFT is a small and simple utility that allows you to view and extract contents of TNEF-encoded e-mail messages (winmail.dat).
