The table below lists the public domain/shareware/evaluation copies of applications available for Internet exploration and WWW development. To pick-up a copy of the program, select the application web page link where you can download the most recent version. Unless otherwise noted, software download links point to the vendor's web page(s).

SSH/SFTP ssh icon SSH Secure Shell Client

SSH Secure Shell Client, by SSH Communications Security, provides secure telnet-like connections and secure FTP-like file transfers to servers that support the ssh protocol (e.g., apollo.sfsu.edu and libra.sfsu.edu). Please read the SFSU Installation and usage instructions. The SSH 3.2.3 manual is available online and in pdf format. The 3.2.9 release notes are available in pdf format.

FileZilla

Free SFTP/FTP solution

FileZilla is a powerful SFTP/FTP client for Windows XP and Vista. It has been designed for ease of use and with support for as many features as possible, while still being fast and reliable.

Quicktime, by Apple, is used to view video clips created in the Quicktime (.mov) format and can play various audio file formats (.mp3, .aif, AAC and more).

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Reader software is the global standard for electronic document sharing. It is the only PDF viewer that can open and interact with all PDF documents. Use Adobe Reader to view, search, digitally sign, verify, print, and collaborate on Adobe PDF files.
Decompress FilZip

FilZip v. 3.0.6

Use FilZip to manipulate compressed file archives. (e.g., extract files from an archive, create new archives, add and remove files from an archive). The .zip format is the most common but many others are supported.
WWW Browser Firefox icon

Firefox 2.0

 

Firefox is a popular web browser that is generally more secure and less prone to spyware than other browsers. Supports tabbed browsing.
Uninstall older versions using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel before installing newer versions. Check the Firefox FAQ and/or the Mozilla Firefox knowledgebase for solutions to problems, frequently asked questions, and tips. If certain sites do not load properly, use Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer is a web browser by Microsoft that comes installed on all Windows systems. Internet Explorer is required for using the Windows update feature to install Windows critical updates.

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal spyware detection and removal program is available free for home use but is not free for university-owned machines. More advanced pay versions are available.

SpywareBlaster can prevent the installation of spyware; however, it cannot remove spyware or pests.
