Microsoft Student Select Frequently Asked Questions

How many units can a student purchase? Students are eligible to purchase one copy of each Software product. A license is considered one copy for that student.
How many installations of the Windows OS can a student make? The Windows Operating System will install on one computer an unlimited amount of times (if the PC were to crash, the student can reinstall the software). When the software is installed, the student will be required to register the product with Microsoft or the product will not install. The registration will take the Key Code of the CD-Rom and a Serial number from the computer and store them in a Microsoft Database, as long as these two numbers match, the CD-Rom will keep installing on that computer.
How many installations can a student make with the Office family? Office can be installed on two computers that belong to one student. Under the product use rights, the student can install Office on one desktop and one portable device (laptop). The student must own both devices. When the software is installed, the student will be required to register the product with Microsoft, or the product will not install. The registration will take the Key Code of the CD-Rom and a Serial number from the computer and store them in a Microsoft Database. As long as these two numbers match, the CD-Rom will keep installing on either of the two computers.
What price does the SFSU Bookstore charge the students for the license and software? The assignment of price will be up to the SFSU Bookstore. The pricelist has your cost and the list price of the product.
A student wants Office 2000, but I only see a license for Office XP, what do I order? You will always need to purchase a license for the current version of the Microsoft Product. The current version license will grant the Student Down-Grade rights, which will allow them to install Office 2000.
The SFSU Bookstore had a rental program in place, can the Bookstore still rent to students under the new contract? The new contract does not include any type of rental program. All current rental programs are not valid after 12/31/02.
Can someone make a “burned” copy of the Student CD-Rom? The duplication of Student CD-Roms is strictly prohibited.
I don’t see Frontpage or Visual Studio .NET on the pricelist, can I still purchase them? Frontpage and Visual Studio .NET are not covered under this agreement, and therefore can not be sold to students as of 12/31/02. If the SFSU Bookstore has stock left over for these items, they can be sold to faculty or staff members within the CSU System. Faculty and Staff do not need licensing for Frontpage or Visual Studio .Net.
The SFSU Bookstore is still getting requests from students for Frontpage and Visual Studio .Net. You can purchase these products as a full package product (FPP). The FPP includes one license and one CD-Rom. These can be ordered at anytime, in any quantity.
When can the SFSU Bookstore place an order, and what is the lead time of the media? The SFSU Bookstore can order as the stock runs low, as long as the 25 unit minimum is met per order. The typical lead time varies on the quantities that are being requested, with an average lead time of 14 days. We recommend placing your order at least 3 weeks prior to the start of a new semester/trimester.
