Checking SFSU E-mail
Use SFSU's Web-based email/calendaring/contact program - inside SF State e-mail.
Advantages:
- Easy-to-use graphical interface
- Can check mail from any computer on the Internet, as long as the computer has a supported Web browser
- Also provides easy access to your calendar, to-do list, and address book
- Easy to view attachment files and/or read HTML mail
Disadvantages:
- No way to read/write e-mail messages when offline.
Alternatively, you can forward your SFSU e-mail to a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) e-mail account (such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, etc). Note, however, that we strongly discourage faculty and staff to forward their e-mail to a commercial ISP.
Advantages:
- Can check mail from any computer on the Internet
- Most Web-based e-mail programs allow you to view graphic images and handle attachments easily.
Disadvantages:
- Email sent from an outside e-mail account will not have an SFSU return address.
- SFSU can not guarantee or provide support for off campus services.
- Some web email services only allow a small storage area for e-mail.

Changing your password and login name
Password change:
Students, staff and faculty can change passwords for personal SFSU accounts using a Web browser at https://www.sfsu.edu/email
Login name:
To obtain a new SFSU login name, you must first apply to have your current account deleted. Once the account is deleted you can use the online form to apply for a new SFSU account. Follow the steps below:
- Download all the files you need from your account to a floppy disk, zip disk or to your own personal computer.
- Fill out the online "Internet Account Modification" form to submit a request for deletion of the account. In the Request section of the form check the radio button next to 'Delete account'. Click the 'Submit Request' button to submit the form.
- After 5 working days, fill out the online SFSU Email Account Services form.
Information for Beginners
We recommend you attend one or more of the short training courses offered by various campus departments. The Technology Training Calendar lists classes provided by the Division of Information Technology. These courses are also posted on the bulletin board outside of Administration room 103. The J. Paul Leonard Library and the Academic Technology also provide workshops and short training courses.
Most bookstores, including the SFSU Bookstore, have an abundance of books on a large variety of topics from Email to the World Wide Web in the computer section.
Switching from POP to IMAP
To improve e-mail service for the entire campus community, POP is no longer a recommended e-mail protocol due to the excessive amount of server resources required when accessing e-mail from POP clients. Switch from POP to IMAP by following instructions provided at:
Web Page Creation
All students, staff and faculty can create their own personal Web site using their existing SFSU Internet account. Information regarding Web site creation can be obtained at: http://www.sfsu.edu/training/publish.htm.
Special Web accounts are available for departments and official student organizations.
Wireless Network
SFSU students, faculty and staff with wireless-capable computers can access the wireless network on campus. More technical information regarding specific wireless cards supported, software configuration and wireless coverage can be found at: http://www.sfsu.edu/~helpdesk/wireless
