Roman Oil Lamps

Oil Lamps, inv. s. 87, inv. s. 88
Roman. 1st-2nd AD
The lamp are broad with spatula-like nozzles and transverse handles. Both lamps are unglazed and made from moulds. The shape of the lamps allowed for easy transport, since they could be stacked side by side or on top of one another. Earlier versions of these lamps depicted "bird heads" on the main body, but the latter lamps (like the two above) feature incised notches as simplified decoration.
