APPLICATION FORMS

There are two Department application forms for the Creative Writing Graduate Programs at San Francisco State University: one for the M.A. in English: Creative Writing, and one for the M.F.A. in Creative Writing. M.F.A. applicants who would like to be considered for the M.A. if they aren't accepted for the M.F.A. should fill out only the M.F.A. application form. Please read the following instructions before filling out the application form of your choice:

CHECKLIST FOR APPLICANTS TO THE M.A. PROGRAM IN ENGLISH: CREATIVE WRITING

Please note that two different applications are required for the M.A., which go to two different offices.

____a. One Creative Writing Department M.A. form.

____b. One manuscript sample of your work (either 15 pages of prose, 15 poems, or a complete play with a brief synopsis). Staple or paperclip your manuscript, and put your name on it. The Creative Writing Department MA Application Form must accompany the manuscript. Warning: Once your manuscript has been mailed, there can be no changes, substitutions or additions to it. Your manuscript cannot be returned. Please don't send your only copy.

____c. One copy of all college or university transcripts. This can be an unofficial copy; a xerox of your own copy would be fine. This copy should be addressed to The Creative Writing Department (address above).

____d. Two letters of recommendation. No special form is necessary. Letters may be sent under separate cover directly form the letter writer and should be addressed using the address above.

Items c. and d. may be sent separately, but if you can, send them in with your manuscript. Deadline for all materials (manuscript, letters of recommendation and transcripts): the preceding December 15 for the fall semester. Applications are not accepted for the spring semester. Late applications are never accepted. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please Note: The G.R.E. is not required!

II. Send to the Graduate Division Office, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco CA 94132-1722:

____1. Official "CSU Application for Graduate and Postbaccalaureate Admission": Click here, or write to the Graduate Division (address above) or call (415) 338-2234 to get this application.

____2. One official copy of all college or university transcripts. Be sure to send these to the Graduate Division, San Francisco State University (address above).

Deadline: December 15 for the fall semester. Late applications are not accepted.

Departmental application forms and manuscripts are NOT accepted online. Please send your department application via regular mail.

All materials received regarding an application for admission to the graduate programs and all evaluations of those materials are strictly confidential. Such materials will not be returned to an applicant nor will they be made available to an applicant.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL TO ASK ABOUT YOUR APPLICATION! WE WILL SEND YOU A LETTER OF RECEIPT. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION LETTERS WILL BE SENT THE LAST WEEK IN APRIL.

____1. The M.F.A. form, with a manuscript sample of your work (either 15 pages of fiction, 15 poems, or a complete play, with a brief synopsis). Staple or paper clip your manuscript, and put your name on it. Warning: once your manuscript has been mailed, there can be no changes, substitutions or additions to it! If you would be interested in accepting a place in the M.A. program if you are not admitted to the M.F.A., please check "yes" on the M.F.A. application form. Do not send in the M.A. form. Because of the large number of applications to the graduate programs, your manuscript cannot be returned. Please don't send your only copy!

____2. Two letters of recommendation. No special form is necessary. Letters should be addressed to the Admissions Committee, Creative Writing Department (address above).

____3. One copy of all college or university transcripts. This can be an unofficial copy; a xerox of your own copy would be fine. This copy should be addressed to The Creative Writing Department (address above).
