A Message From the Dean

I welcome you to the College of Humanities' website. We in the humanities are engaged in that part of a student's education which helps to create informed citizens without whom our experiment with democracy cannot succeed.

The president of the University of Maine at Farmington, Theodora Kalikow, recently spoke of how, even though parts of the content and some of the methods of learning may change, the results of a good humanities-based education "remain constant over time and increasingly 'practical' in our global society: a lithe mind, able to move rapidly in new directions; the ability to analyze a problem, imagine solutions, weigh them by rational criteria, and commit to one; an understanding of the methodologies of investigation of various types of knowledge to acquire the ability to become one's own best, lifelong teacher; a skepticism of facile arguments and easy solutions, and a distrust of simplistic analysis; a toleration of ambiguity and complexity; an ability to imagine and share the perceptions of different individuals, cultures, and times; an appreciation of the community, one's place in it, and the need to contribute to society through public and private service.
