2nd Joint CISFSU-CCs-TSs Meeting for Sustainable Development

The Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University (SF State) hosted the 2nd Annual Joint Meeting of CISFSU-Affiliated Confucius Classrooms-Teaching Sites sponsored by Hanban on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Seven Hills Conference Center of SF State, focusing on the Theme - Cooperation, Innovation, Inclusion, and Sharing for Sustainable Development.

Jiaxin Xie, Director of the Confucius Institute, made welcome remarks to kick off the joint meeting. 30 participants gathered together to review 2016 programs and share strategic action plan for 2017. Spring Festival greetings from Dr. Yenbo Wu, AVP for International Education of SF State, reached to all participants including Education Counselor Jun Yang and Consul Yang Zhang from Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, principals and Chinese language teachers from five affiliated Confucius Classrooms and three Teaching Sites, and Confucius Institute team members.

Early in the morning of February 4, three hours before the meeting, we received a very encouraging letter from Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters through WeChat as follows:

We are very grateful to you for your hardworking and greatly appreciate SF State President and Principles of the host schools of Confucius Classrooms/Teaching Sites for your support and help in promoting CI/CC programs. We hope that we'll continue to make every effort and work together in the New Year, making greater contributions to Chinese language and culture education and further promoting Sino-US people-to-people exchanges.

Chinese Education Counselor Yang congratulated CI SF State on successfully networking with CCs and TSs in promoting Chinese language and culture education in northern California, highly praising CC/TS host school Principals/Directors for their leadership and support expanding their Chinese courses and promoting East-West cultural exchanges on campus and in communities.

At Principals’ Forum, five school principals and three teaching site directors presented their achievements in 2016 in running Chinese programs and expanding Chinese cultural events, sharing their work plan and proposals for future cooperation with CISFS. Topics covered include:

  • The Impact of CC on Chinese Language & Culture Programs on Campus and in Communities;
  • The Accomplishments of CC/TS in 2015-16 Academic Year;
  • The Strategic Action Plan for CC/TS Sustainable Development;
  • Win-Win Cooperation and Innovation in Chinese Curriculum Development.

To enable our partners to better understand our mission, values and programs, and effectively connect CCs and TSs with CI at SF State in realizing our shared goals in 2017, we made a presentation on:

  • Overview of CI at SF State - A Comprehensive CI with Multifunction;
  • 2016 Brand Programs & Highlights;
  • 2017 Strategic Action Plan & Programs.

At Teachers’ Forum, seven teachers made presentations on:

  • Approaches to Teaching Chinese in K-12 Schools;
  • Effective Teaching Methods in Classrooms;
  • Teaching Activities and Teaching Materials;
  • Technology for Teaching Chinese and Culture;
  • Chinese Activities.

The Joint Meeting came to a successful conclusion after Q&As. All participating principals and teachers commended the Confucius Institute upon well-designed and carefully arranged meeting with very motivated theme and highly focused topics for school principals and language teachers to share their common interests and discuss specific questions from their perspectives.

All principals and teachers enjoyed the meeting, sharing with colleagues from different locations, hearing how the different schools are developing their programs. They returned home excited about the continued growth of the Chinese and culture programs, feeling happy to be here with us, and commending the meeting as a productive and informative annual seminar helpful for all Confucius Classrooms and Teaching Sites. We hope that our partners will have more accomplishments and stories to share at 3rd Joint Meeting in 2018.

旧金山州立大学孔子学院第二届联席会议召开

2月4日,旧金山州立大学孔子学院/孔子课堂及中文教学点第二届联席会议在州大召开。联席会议开幕式由州大孔院外方院长谢家新主持,中国驻旧金山领事馆教育参赞杨军先生和领事张杨女士应邀出席会议,州大孔院下属的五所孔子课堂及三个中文教学点的负责人和汉语教师30余人参加了会议。

国家汉办在联席会当天发来贺信,感谢各学校校长对孔子学院和孔子课堂的支持和帮助,感谢大家的辛勤工作。希望在新的一年里携手并肩,共同努力,为当地汉语教学和中美教育人文交流作出新的卓有成效的贡献,并预祝联席会议圆满成功。

州大主管国际教育的协理副校长吴彦伯博士专门发来欢迎辞,对远道而来的学校负责人和中文教师表示热烈欢迎。 杨军参赞向出席会议的学校负责人和老师们致以新年祝福,并介绍了第十一届全球孔子学院大会情况。谢家新院长希望各学校在总结工作成果、交流中文教学和文化推广经验的基础上,进一步探讨中文教学和文化推广面临的挑战和解决办法,拟定合作项目,共谋创新发展。

会议分为两个阶段,上午各孔子课堂和中文教学点负责人介绍2016年开展中文教学和中国文化活动取得的成果、面临的挑战和2017年的发展计划。州大孔院院长谢家新向与会者报告孔院2016年开展的工作,并向大家介绍了2017年的总体规划及创新项目。

下午与会中文教师分享教学工作中的体会和经验。有的介绍通过现代科技技术,利用丰富的网络资源,寓教于乐,激发学生学习中文的兴趣;有的展示学生学习的视频,介绍如何利用中国元素引导学生说中文、读中文、写中文;有的介绍如何将外语教学标准运用在中文课堂教学中。老师们还就教学方法、课堂管理,教学资源利用、文化与语言相结合的教学模式进行了充分的交流。

会上与会学校负责人和中文教师对孔子学院总部在经费、教学资料、文化用品、教师培训、访华团和夏令营等方面给予孔子课堂的支持表示由衷的感谢。同时也提到,随着中文教学在北加州地区的发展,教学资源、教学材料甚感不足,合格的中文教师也匮乏,希望孔子学院和中国领事馆在财力、物力和人力上给予进一步的支持和帮助,希望以孔子学院为龙头,进一步加强各孔子课堂,中文教学点的合作和交流。

中国驻旧金山领馆杨军参赞和旧金山州大孔院院长认真听取与会人员的建议、意见和困难。杨参赞感谢各学校领导和老师们积极参与中文课程和文化活动的建设和发展,感谢大家在各自的教学和文化交流活动中做出的贡献,表示将大力支持中文教学和文化交流的工作。同时也感谢州大孔院为本次联席会议的圆满召开所做的工作。

州大孔院院长谢家新主持了上午的校长论坛,中方院长吴成年主持了下午的教师论坛。两位院长充分肯定了孔子课堂和中文教学点在中文教学、文化推广活动中做出的努力,感谢大家为这次联席会议作了充分的准备和精彩的分享,希望各校再接再厉,在新的一年里再创佳绩,明年在第三届联席会上分享更多的经验。
