Rules and Regulations - Part 1

  EVENT REGULATIONS & INSTRUCTION
1 Painting / Drawing
  • On-site competition. Theme will be announced at the contest.
  • Organizer will provide paper. Participants must bring their own drawing tools.
  • Painting/drawing can be in pencil or color.
  • Participants are given one hour to complete this competition.
2 Chinese Calligraphy (Brush)
  • On-site competition. Writing sample will be provided at the contest.
  • Organizer will provide paper. Participants must bring their own brush and ink.
  • Participants have the option of using simplified Chinese writing sample or traditional Chinese writing sample.
  • Participants are given one hour to complete this competition.
3 Chinese Calligraphy (Pen)
  • On-site competition. Writing sample will be provided at the contest.
  • Organizer will provide paper. Participants must bring their own writing tools (fountain pen, ink pen, pencil, etc).
  • Participants have the option of using simplified Chinese writing sample or traditional Chinese writing sample.
  • Participants are given one hour to complete this competition.
4 Chinese Composition
  • On-site competition. Theme will be announced at the contest.
  • Organizer will provide paper. Participants must bring their own writing tools.
  • Participants may bring their own paper dictionaries only.
  • Participants have the option of writing in simplified or traditional Chinese characters.
  • Participants are given one hour for this competition.
5 Chinese Translation
  • On-site competition. Questions will be announced at the contest.
  • This is a two-way translation competition including Chinese into English and English into Chinese.
  • Organizers will provide paper. Participants must bring their own writing tools.
  • Participants may bring their own paper dictionaries only.
  • Participants have the option of writing in simplified or traditional Chinese character.
  • Participants are given one hour to complete this competition.
6 Chinese Poetry Recital
  • The event is divided into "native Chinese speaker" and "non-native Chinese speaker" for both Cantonese and Mandarin competitions.
  • Each participant can only take part in one recital competition.
  • Participants must recite the organizer-selected poem and a self-selected poem that is limited in 1-2 minutes. The self-selected poem may not be changed at the competition.
  • Organizer selected poems are available on our website: www.sfsu.edu/~ci .
  • Participants must provide a copy of their self-selected poem with their application.

Rules and Regulations - Part 2

      • One email address can be used for only one student to register online. If you use the same email address to register for another student, then the student you previously registered will be automatically deleted.

      • Each participant may sign up for three events maximum.
      • All participants must arrive at the venue and check in 30 minutes prior to the event. They pick up their name tags at the registration table and report to the judges in an assigned classroom before the competition.
      • For issues of safety, elementary students (grades K-5) must be picked up from the room of the contest by a parent/guardian at the end of the competition.
      • No admittance will be allowed for participants who arrive 30 minutes later than the starting time.
      • During the poetry recital, if the classroom can accommodate all students and their parents, parents are welcome to stay and observe. However, if the room is full, participating students have priority to the seats.? Parents will not be allowed in the rooms of other events.
      • “Non-native speakers” refers to students whose home language is not Mandarin/Cantonese and are attending a Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) language program, such as immersion, foreign language, after school, or weekend programs.
      • “Native speakers” refers to students, whose home language is Mandarin/Cantonese and may or may not be attending a Chinese language program, including Chinese-English bilingual, after school, or weekend programs.
      • Poetry recital participants may only present their name prior to beginning their recital. Participants may not add any self-introduction, school information, or introduction of the poem. Participants may not wear their school uniforms.
      • Poetry recital participants may not bring any stage props to support his/her presentation.
      • Only on-line application, we will not accept mailing or drop-in applications. Fax and Email applications are considered invalid. Please apply online at http://www.sfsu.edu/~ci

      • Participants will receive confirmation as soon as they complete registration online. We will post the schedule for each contest group at http://www.sfsu.edu/~ci before February 22, 2013.
