Overview
2013 Summer Institute for Chinese Language Teachers is a seven-day extensive training program designed to meet all Chinese language educators’ needs in enhancing their knowledge about Chinese language and culture and improving their teaching capabilities. The trainers will make special presentations from their perspectives, sharing their understanding of TCSL/TCFL, hands-on experience, and teaching resources. We hope 2013 Summer Institute will help local schools in Northern California improve the quality of Chinese language teaching and prepare sufficient qualified teachers for today and tomorrow. A certificate of completion will be issued to each trainee upon successful completion of the whole training program.
Institute Goals
Through 2013 Summer Institute, Confucius Institute at SF State would like all participants to benefit from the lectures and presentations, achieving inclusive excellence, advancing toward their dream for success in teaching Chinese language and culture in their schools. Building on research and previous experiences, the Institute addresses three broad goals
- To train sufficient qualified teachers with updated knowledge of Chinese language and culture;
- To help trainees remain informed about the latest development in methods and teaching strategies;
- To enhance trainees’ capabilities in adopting appropriate textbooks/teaching materials and utilizing effective teaching skills in teaching Chinese language at all levels.
Curriculum
Seven-day intensive training courses from June 9 through June 15 at SFSU will focus on:
- Theory and practice of TCSL/TCFL in the U.S.
- Content knowledge of Chinese language, including Chinese phonology, lexicology, characters, and grammar
- Teaching Chinese in American K-12 schools and colleges/universities: successful route for qualified Chinese language teachers, knowledge learning and professional training
- Teachers' knowledge and understanding of their role as a teacher: professionalism, and qualification of a credentialed teacher
- Integration of Chinese language and Chinese culture motivates learners to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and think critically and creatively
- Classroom activities and the quality of teaching: case studies, demonstrations, and evaluation

Photos and Recordings
The host will use photos or recordings for the purpose of promoting Chinese language and cultural programs and other non-commercial activities.

Prof. Hesheng Zhang张和生教授
Prof. Hesheng Zhang is Executive Dean of College of Chinese Language & Culture at Beijing Normal University. His research interests are: Chinese lexicology, Chinese characters and teaching Chinese as a second language. He is a well-known scholar in teaching Chinese lexicology and characters with rich experience in training students and teachers abroad including the U.S, England, Korea and many other counties in the world.
北京师范大学汉语文化学院执行院长,教授。主要从事汉语词汇学、汉字学研究及对外汉语教学研究。在汉语词汇教学及汉字教学方面由较深入的研究。曾在美国、英国、韩国等多个国家考察、任教、讲学、培训教师,有特别丰富的海外教学经验和培训经验。
Prof. Yuhui Lǚ吕俞辉教授
Prof. Lǚ, Yuhui is Assistant Dean of the College of Chinese Language & Culture at Beijing Normal University. Her research interests are: Chinese grammar, cross-culture communication and Chinese lexicology. She has taught Chinese in the U.S., Korea, and many other countries, and earned very rich experience in teaching international students and training local teachers abroad.
北京师范大学汉语文化学院副教授,院长助理。主要从事汉语语法学研究、跨文化交际研究及对外汉语词汇教学研究。曾在美国、韩国等多个国家任教、培训教师,有非常丰富的海外教学经验和培训经验。
