Summer 2011 Chinese Language & Culture Classes
(10-Week Classes: June 6th - August 12th)
Basic Chinese I
Basic Chinese I is designed for students without previous Chinese training, covering basic
pronunciation, sentence patterns, reading, writing, conversation and grammar. Students will learn
to communicate with native speakers and lay a solid foundation for further studies, as well as
obtaining crucial skills for business communication.
Time: Mondays 18:30-20:30
Classroom: HUM 474
Basic Chinese II
Basic Chinese II is designed for students with one-semester learning experience to improve
their basic communicative skills toward intermediate level studies in pronunciation, sentences
patterns, reading, writing, conversation and grammar. Students will gain more skills in
daily communication with native speakers, as well as obtaining crucial skills for business
communication.
Time: Mondays 18:30-20:30
Classroom: HUM 580
Basic Chinese III
Basic Chinese III is designed for students with two-semester learning experience to further
advance their Chinese language proficiency in communicating with native speakers. Students
will feel more comfortable in listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as obtaining
crucial skills for business communication.
Time: Wednesdays 18:30-20:30
Classroom: HUM 474
Mandarin Training for Cantonese Speakers
This class is specifically designed for Cantonese speakers who are interested in speaking
Mandarin (PutongHua). Instructor will help learners identify different sounds between Mandarin
and Cantonese through practice of phonetic drills and learning activities. The focus is on skill
development in speaking Mandarin.
Time: Tuesdays 18:30-20:30

Traditional Chinese Painting
Traditional Chinese Painting is designed for beginners to learn how to use traditional Chinese
brush painting techniques to paint a range of popular subjects including flower-and-bird
paintings, landscapes, and human figure composition.
Time: Wednesdays 18:30-20:30
