About the Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University

The Confucius Institute is made up of three colleges at san Francisco State, the College of Education, which will train teachers and develop curricula, the College of Humanities, which will offer Chinese courses to matriculated students, and the College of Extended Learning, which will provide classes to nondiploma students.The Office of International Programs also coordinates exchange programs. The major goal of the Confucius institute is to incorporate three major pillars of Teacher Training, Chinese Language Teaching, and Outreach, Research and Exchange.

Teacher Training

Promote up-to-date training of teachers of Chinese as a second, foreign, or heritage language throughout California and the Western United States in K-12 public and private schools, community-based heritage language schools, and community colleges.

Promote the development of a Chinese language teaching curriculum that reflects the latest and best research and theories of language development at all educational levels, kindergarten through university.

Develop and maintain a modern print-based and multimedia clearinghouse for Chinese language teaching materials and other related Chinese cultural materials.


Chinese Language Teaching

Offer non-degree, short-term courses, lectures, seminars, and other learning opportunities in general Chinese and Chinese for special purposes to the California community and beyond.

Expand the Chinese language instruction offered through SFSU to matriculated students so that increasing numbers of them will attain advanced linguistic competency for use in a variety of disciplines and careers.

Promote and enhance the teaching of Chinese language and culture to students K-16 in Northern California schools.



Outreach, Research, and Exchange

Enhance intercultural understanding in the California community by sponsoring courses and other public events with a focus on China and on the learning of Chinese language and culture.
