Mission and Goals |

The mission of the Department of Consumer and Family
Studies/Dietetics stated below is central to the mission of San Francisco State
University. The overall mission is to prepare scholarly professionals who contribute
to the well-being of individuals, families, consumers and the institutions, industries
and businesses serving them within a highly diverse, urban and global community.
The rigorous, comprehensive curricula encompass both liberal and professional
education and are designed to promote excellence in intellectual achievement to
enhance the human condition; to impact the quality of goods and services in responding
to human needs across the life span; to address economic, technical, social, health
and environmental issues impacting diverse individuals and families; and to provide
information for public policy formation. The major purpose of the Consumer and
Family Studies/Dietetics Department is the preparation of professionals for broad
career options in services, business, industry, health, government, and education
which utilize the family and consumer sciences/dietetics knowledge base. The CFS/D
Department also shares in the responsibility for meeting the University's general
education objectives by providing course work to meet diverse student needs and
demands. In addition, the Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics Department fulfills
the state's Educational Master Plan by providing the only comprehensive family
and consumer sciences curriculum in higher education accessible to students from
over 10 counties. To fulfill its mission, the Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics
Department is committed to the following priorities:

the critical thinking and problem solving skills for diverse students to become
professionals who will help diverse consumers, families and individuals to develop
and maintain economic, physical and psycho-social well-being. Knowledge of the
following is necessary to attain a satisfactory quality of life: child development,
family and interpersonal relationships, clothing/textiles, dietetics, foods/nutrition,
foodservice management, family economics, housing, and interior design. |
