The main ingredient:

MDMA (3-4-methylenedioxymethampheta-mine), is a synthetic drug with amphetamine-like and hallucinogenic properties. It is classified as a stimulant acts as a stimulant to the brain. Often the pills are mixed with other drugs like PCP, speed, PMA, caffeine, and DXM.

Why People May Use Ecstasy

  • Enhanced sensory experiences
  • Feel closer to people from increased empathy towards self and others
  • Dance and stay up late
  • Group of friends use it
  • Curiosity
  • Boredom

Impact of Use

Academic Impact

  • Poorer academic performance
  • Tardiness and/or absenteeism due to withdrawal
  • Difficulty retaining information, forgetfulness
  • Poor memory

Social Impact

  • Financial problems
  • Become dependant on using ecstasy to enjoy social events
  • Because use often helps overcome anxiety, much of the credit for developing social skills is given to taking the pill
  • Experience closeness in relationships only when getting high, unable to transfer the experiences when sober.
  • Can become psychologically addictive

Physiological Impact

  • Short term effects include dehydration, lockjaw, teeth grinding,
  • Day after use is often a "crash" experience from depleted seratonin levels in the brain
  • Changes in brain chemistry, possible permanent damage to synapses in the brain leading to long term depression and problems with mood regulation
  • Impaired memory and interferance in learning ability
  • Can lead to unwanted or unprotected sex, STD's
  • Deaths have primarily occured as a result of heatstroke from dehydration

Academic and Legal Consequences

  • University Judicial sanctions leading to suspension or expulsion
  • Breaking your University Housing contract leading to possible eviction
  • Ecstasy is classified as a "Schedule 1" controlled substance along with other narcotics like heroin, cocaine, and LSD
  • Possible loss of federally funded financial aid
