Frequently Asked Questions
Why is VISA credit card no longer accepted?
San Francisco State University has not accepted VISA credit card since 2003. EPOS, a third party agent contracted by the University for on-line payment processing, no longer accepts VISA credit card because the VISA U.S.A. regulations require charging a fixed processing fee for all transactions, regardless of the amount. SF State has many transactions that are smaller in dollar amount than the fixed fee. It is an unfair burden to ask students, for example, to pay a $20 transaction fee in order to make a $20 credit card charge.
Most CSU campuses with contracted outside vendors for on-line credit card payment processing also do not accept VISA. Ninteen (19) out of twenty-three (23) CSU campuses accept only MasterCard, American Express, Discover cards and charge, at least, a 2.9 percent convenience fee.
Given the restrictions of the VISA U.S.A. regulations many large universities such as NYU, Ohio State University, Georgia State University, Arizona State University and many others no longer accept VISA as a method of payment.
