ATHLETICS AND SPORTS

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

During San Francisco State University's Centennial Celebration (1899-1999), the Department of Athletics also celebrated its inaugural year as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the nation's premier National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II conference. With SFSU's membership to the CCAA, the university is permitted to offer athletically-based financial aid to the diverse contingent of 350 student-athletes and 1,500 recruits that it works with each year. The CCAA is comprised of Cal. Poly. Pomona, Cal. State Bakersfield, Cal. State Dominguez Hills, Cal. State Los Angeles, Cal. State San Bernardino, Cal. State Stanislaus, Chico State, Grand Canyon University (AZ), Sonoma State, U.C. Davis, U.C. Riverside, and an associate membership for U.C. San Diego.

Mission: Intercollegiate athletics is an integral component of the academic experience at San Francisco State University. The specific mission is to provide a broad-based athletics program that fosters the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development of diverse and highly skilled student-athletes. This program provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to share experiences and by doing so, enhances the cohesiveness of campus life. The department's efforts to accomplish this mission reflects the university's quest for excellence.

The SFSU athletics program is an important aspect of the total educational program--professional, personal, and intellectual enrichment. Coaches and staff are concerned with the academic work of each student-athlete. Their goal is to see that SFSU student-athletes graduate from the university with their chosen degree and to become a contributing factor in the community.

INTRAMURAL/RECREATIONAL SPORTS PROGRAM

The Intramural/Recreational Sports Program under the supervision of the Department of Kinesiology provides an opportunity for students and faculty/staff to participate in sport activities in a structured and competitive setting and on an informal, "freeplay," drop-in basis. The goal of the Intramural/Recreational Sports staff is to encourage fair play, equality in participation, fun, and enjoyment in a safe environment.

Intramural leagues, tournaments, and special events are offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. A variety of men's, women's, and coed sports are offered including: basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, swimming, bowling, ultimate frisbee, water polo, softball, badminton, tennis, and flag football. Through their involvement in the program as officials, supervisors, and players, students have an opportunity to meet new people, to develop leadership skills, and keep fit in a fun environment.

For those not interested in organized events, the Kinesiology facilities are available at the noon hour and certain evening hours for student and faculty/staff recreational use. For more information about IM/REC, call (415) 338-3363.
