The Master of Business Administration and the Master of Science in Business Administration are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.

Department Structure

The College of Business is made up of seven departments that provide limited specialization in representative areas of business and governmental activity and in teaching. The departments, supervised by chairpersons, are: Accounting, Business Analysis and Computing Systems, Finance, Hospitality Management, International Business, Management, and Marketing.

College Mission

The mission of the College of Business at San Francisco State University is to provide quality undergraduate and graduate professional business education for its unique student population.

The undergraduate and graduate degree programs and training and research institutes are designed to meet the professional objectives and educational needs of student-customers, the human resource needs of employer-customers, and the specialized educational requirements of Bay Area and selected international organizations.

The college provides students with a common core of basic business knowledge, applied problem solving abilities, effective communications skills, technological fluency, ethical values, and appreciation of diversity.

Consonant with the missions of the university and the CSU system, the faculty's primary emphasis is excellence in teaching. Secondary emphasis is placed on intellectual contributions, especially instructionally-related and applied research; tertiary emphasis is placed on service.

In keeping with the university's motto, "The City's University," the College of Business is committed to interacting with, serving, and involving the Bay Area community in its programs through such avenues as advisory boards, alumni activities, seminars, internships, and faculty consulting and applied research.

The goal of these undergraduate programs is to provide students with rigorous accredited programs built upon a strong general education, theoretical foundations, and practical business education for developing career skills necessary in a highly competitive environment.

In order to prepare students to exercise critical judgment in making decisions, the college stresses developing analytical skills, respect for ethical standards, building interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work in an ever-changing environment.

The degree in Business Administration provides limited specialization in a number of functional and cross-functional areas. The degree in Hospitality Management provides a specialized program in the area of hotel management.

The M.B.A. provides students with a broad background of knowledge, societal and environmental awareness, analytical and decision-making skills, and interpersonal and communication abilities, which are appropriate for career progress to the highest organizational levels. This program is primarily designed for students with non-business baccalaureate degrees but also provides challenging advanced study for those with business baccalaureate degrees.

The M.S.B.A. provides students with the opportunity to pursue in-depth specialized or cross-disciplinary study through individually customized programs, which are appropriate for each student's career development, in technical areas and/or specialized managerial paths. This program also develops critical analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and communication abilities.

The M.S. in Taxation broadens and enhances the knowledge of current tax practitioners and recent graduates of accounting programs who are interested in pursuing an expanded career as tax professionals.

The M.S. in Accountancy is designed to meet the increasing demands of the accounting profession for accounting education that is more specific, in greater depth, and professionally oriented. Graduates of this program will be prepared for these increasing demands, and they will be able to compete successfully for jobs at the top of their profession.
