The Alumni Association exists to advance the reputation and interests of the university, its administration, faculty, students, and graduates; to engage in educational programs and special activities for its members; and to provide an ongoing link between the university and its graduates for their mutual benefit. It is also a source of financial assistance in the form of scholarships.
Membership is open to those who (a) have been awarded a degree or credential by the university; (b) are members of the faculty or administrative staff; (c) have attended the university as a graduate student for at least two semesters; or (d) have attended the university as an undergraduate for at least two semesters. In addition, "Friends of the University" may join the Alumni Association through Affiliate membership. This membership is open to any person demonstrating an interest in San Francisco State University.
Among the current benefits of membership are privileges for use of the university library, and all other CSU libraries, access to the career center and MonsterTRAK.com, eligibility for an Association-sponsored health plan, a subscription to SF State Magazine, and a variety of other discounts. Located in the center of Campus, this unique modern structure serves as a mecca for student-focused activities. In addition to housing many organizations that enhance student life, this spacious complex is also the location for a multitude of needed services such as the Campus Bookstore, the offices of campus student government, meeting and conference rooms, and twelve separate food facilities. The Center provides comfortable lounge areas for rest, relaxation, conversation or studying. Live entertainment and movies are often scheduled in the Depot and on Malcolm X Plaza, and both student and non-student art exhibits are shown in the Art Gallery. Multicultural programming is coordinated through the Centerís Richard Oakes Multicultural Center. Jack Adams Hall, a 450-seat auditorium, is the venue for guest speakers, workshops and special events. Other interests such as billiards and video games are provided for in the Centerís RacíníCue Games room.
Student fees and revenues generated by the Centerís many varied activities fund the building and the services it provides. An elected governing board decides upon funding allocation, thus allowing direct student input into the Student Center operations. Elections for student representation to the board occur every Fall and students who meet the academic requirements as specified by the Chancellorís Office are encouraged to run. Located in the Student Center, the SFSU Bookstore offers a variety of products and services. New and used textbooks, computer hardware and software, supply and electronic items, general reading books, gifts, and SFSU souvenirs can be purchased in the main store. The Bookstore also includes the Lobby Shop and Snackademic for quick convenient snacks and beverages.

Studies show a positive correlation between productive involvement in student organizations/campus life and academic/career success. The Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development (OSPLD) is charged with assisting students with getting involved, deepening their connection to campus life and developing leadership and social skills that can be applied to careers and life beyond SF State.
The Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development assists with all student organization event programming, including Greek life, and provides leadership training to SF State students. OSPLD educates and advises students regarding University policies, procedures, privileges, and resources. Additionally, OSPLD lends support to student government (a.k.a., Associated Students Inc.), the Cesar Chavez Student Center Governing Board, and to departmental, divisional, and academic-driven events under the direction of the Division of Student Affairs. OSPLD recognizes over 200 plus student organizations each academic year ranging in focus from academic to social, political to cultural, etc. OSPLD provides oversight for these organizations offering advising, leadership training, and University resources to the leaders of said organizations. In order to ensure uniform quality of information, in addition to advising on an individual level, OSPLD requires attendance by student organization leaders at an orientation. At the Student Leader Orientation sessions, students are given a comprehensive introduction to policies and procedures and instruction on how to access resources on campus including funding.
The SF State campus provides one of the most unique fraternity and sorority systems in the country for its students. With approximately 30 organizations, the Fraternity Sorority Council (FSC) is a great outlet for student's academic, service, and social involvement. These organizations are both national and local, representing students of all backgrounds. Organizations within the council focus on specific ethnicities, traditional national organizations, and special interest groups.
The Leadership in Action initiative is designed to provide all SF State students with opportunities and resources to develop and hone their personal leadership skills. In addition, Leadership in Action programs are designed for student leaders on campus to network with each other andgain knowledge related to the multifaceted concept of leadership. The program consists of many components, including an annual Leadership Symposium held at the start of the fall semester, an extensive series of workshops held throughout the fall and spring semesters, an annual Leadership Recognition Reception held in April, as well as various online resources.
Each semester, OSPLD sponsors a Student Activities/Cultural Food Fair that provides each organization with an opportunity to gain membership, raise funds, address issues, and publicize its grou through dialogue, displays, cultural events, entertainment, and contests. Also included in the fair are booths from which the campus community can sample cuisine reflective of the diversity at SF State. The proceeds from this fair directly support student organizations. Watch for publicity and join the fun.
Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development acts as a designee for the University regarding scheduled outdoor events. In particular, OSPLD handles reservations for events on Malcolm X Plaza, the Quad, and Centennial Walkway where OSPLD takes a key role in monitoring these events.
The Associated Students Incorporated (ASI), established in 1944, is the official student body government. It functions as a non-profit, student-run corporation, and is funded by the student activity fee all students pay each semester. That fee also makes each student an Associated Students member, eligible to vote in the annual elections for AS leadership. Early Childhood Education Center. Our new state-of-the-art facility provides SFSU students, faculty, and staff with a nurturing, safe, developmentally appropriate childcare program on campus for children aged six months to five years.
Crafts Festival. Held twice a year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring. The Crafts Festival brings some of the best artisans from around the state to exhibit their wares. All merchandise is chosen with quality and the student budget in mind.
Legal Resource Center. The Legal Resource Center is an informational resource that allows the student to make an informed decision about any legal problem. The center aims to educate students about the law and their rights, so that they may be active participants in their own legal matters. An attorney is available on an appointment basis to consult with students, $10 per half hour. Consultations are confidential.
Performing Arts and Lectures. The Performing Arts and Lectures provides the student body with a variety of concerts, sneak previews, lectures, films, and cultural events, and gives students behind-the-scenes, hands-on experience in performing arts productions.
Project Rebound. Project Rebound is a program specifically developed to assist ex-offenders in adjusting to society by acquiring an education. Rebound travels to institutions to speak to inmates, male and female, to encourage them to get an education through San Francisco State University.
Women's Center. The Women's Center provides a physical space in which every woman on campus can spend time comfortably and an atmosphere which encourages her to develop friendships with her sisters. The Women's Center also has resource files, a referral service, and a library open to all students.
Project Connect. A.S. Project Connect is a recruitment and retention resource center that serves to motivate and support students in pursuing and completing a higher education degree.
Scholarships and Student Organization Funding. ASI offers fifteen graduate and undergraduate scholarships for all majors and special groups. The Associated Students provides many services to students. This is a partial listing. Information about these and other ASI-sponsored events is available at the Main Desk, Student Center.
Health Insurance. The ASI offers a low-cost health and dental insurance plan to students.
Typing Center. The Typing Center has regularly maintained electronic typewriters available for student use. The typewriters are available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Use of the typewriters is free to students with a valid SFSU I.D. card.
San Francisco State University is readily accessible by public transportation from all parts of the Bay Area. Six San Francisco Municipal Railway bus (MUNI) and light rail lines serve the campus at frequent intervals. East Bay commuters have a choice of BART and connecting bus service, or BART and light rail from downtown San Francisco. BART and SamTrans link the Peninsula and the San Francisco Airport with the campus. SF State University operates a shuttle service to supplement the BART connection between campus and the Daly City BART station.
The Bike Barn provides secure bicycle parking. Hours of operation are: Monday-Thursday from 7:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., and 7:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Fridays during the fall and spring semesters. The Bike Barn is located under the gym in Lot 6. You can reach the Bike Barn at 415-338-3170.
The campus is a typical urban setting and parking on surrounding streets is very limited. Approximately 3,000 spaces are available on a first-come basis in the general parking garage, located on the east side of Lake Merced Boulevard between Font and Winston Drive and Lot 25, which is located on Winston Drive between Lake Merced and Buckingham Way. Parking fees are $1.00 per hour with a $5.00 daily maximum. Parking permit pay stations accept coins and bills but do not issue change. Please bring exact change for the pay stations. A valid SF State permit is required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in all lots.
