B.A. in Dance
Minor in Dance
Minor in World Music and Dance
Pre-credential Subject Matter Program

Program Scope

The curriculum for the B.A. program is designed to provide an in-depth study of dance on both practical and theoretical levels, preparing students for graduate studies, K-12 credential programs, performance and choreographic opportunities, cultural dance research, and community teaching.

Majors must complete the 23-unit core and have the electives approved by an adviser. Students can focus on: performance/choreography, which offers a variety of dance techniques, composition, history, aesthetics, music, production, movement science, injury prevention/treatment, and principles of theatrical production management; dance education, which adds proficiency in pedagogy and preparation for a credential program; or dance ethnology, which is designed to provide students with an understanding of research methodology and dance in cultural context.

The pre-credential subject matter program is a five-year program of studies, which meets the California Physical Education Standards through courses in the Department of Kinesiology and in Dance. Upon completion, the student may apply for teacher certification in the College of Education. After completion of both programs, the student will be eligible to teach physical education and dance in the public schools. Students must contact an adviser in Dance for specific requirements.

Students with a major other than Dance should investigate both the Minor in Dance and the Minor in World Music and Dance.

Facilities

Dance related facilities are presently located in three different buildings on campus. The primary studio is located in the Gymnasium. This studio is fully equipped as a dance studio and a small performance laboratory. Adjacent to this studio is a small dance rehearsal studio. The second principal teaching studio is located in the Fine Arts Building. Dance concerts and productions take place in either a 350-seat proscenium theatre or a large 700-seat theatre located in the Creative Arts Building. Special projects with the Department of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts provide access to television production studios and there is access to several smaller theatres on campus.

Career Outlook

Majors graduating from this program can seek employment in a variety of dance-related areas: performing, choreography, dance production, teaching in public or private schools, community recreation centers, or dance studios. Other graduates will continue their education and pursue advanced degrees in dance, creative arts, or related fields.

The San Francisco Bay Area has a very active dance community with more than three hundred performance ensembles, from contemporary to traditional. There are many performance opportunities for talented and trained graduates.

Teaching opportunities are available throughout the region and nationally in private and public education, K-12, community college, and university settings; departments of parks and recreation; YWCA's. The State of California requires a teaching credential for K-12.

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN DANCE
