Program Scope

The programs are designed to deepen theoretical knowledge, to promote professional growth, and to increase the competency of elementary school teachers and early childhood educators. Courses include material that is of an immediate practical nature as well as theory and research.

Career Outlook

The Master of Arts in Education: Concentration in Early Childhood provides early childhood educators with advanced knowledge of research, theory, and practice in early childhood education. This degree provides early childhood educators with the skills and knowledge for leadership positions in early childhood settings as well as in the field as a whole. Courses taken for this program also satisfy the requirements for the Children's Center Instructional and Supervisory Permits.

The Master of Arts in Education: Concentration in Elementary Education provides elementary school teachers with advanced knowledge of research, theory, and practice in the field of elementary education in general as well as within particular subject matter disciplines. This degree provides advanced preparation and professional development for teaching in elementary school as well as for assuming such leadership roles as mentor teachers, curriculum leaders, and staff developers.

The Master of Arts in Education: Concentration in Mathematics Education provides elementary and middle school teachers with advanced knowledge of research, theory, and practice in the teaching and learning of school mathematics and expands their knowledge of mathematics content. Students will be eligible to apply for a supplementary authorization in mathematics for middle school teaching. This degree will also prepare teachers to assume leadership roles in their schools and districts.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION GRADUATE PROGRAMS

General Information

The following types of courses cannot be applied to any of the master's programs.

Some credential courses can be applied toward the master's degree. Graduate courses that fulfill the post-baccalaureate unit requirement for the professional clear credential may, upon advisement, fulfill master's degree requirements as well. Only upper division courses approved on advisement are acceptable for the master's degree.

Written English Proficiency Requirement

Level One: met by passing the Graduate Essay Test (GET). This test is administered by the university Testing Center at the beginning of each semester. Level Two: satisfied by demonstration of English competency on the final project in E ED 895 or the master's thesis in E ED 898.

Enrollment Requirement

Students are required to be enrolled in the university during the semester of anticipated graduation. If students have completed a semester of either E ED 895 (Field Study) or E ED 898 (Master's Thesis), they must enroll in EDUC 897, an Extended Learning course.

MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION: CONCENTRATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Admission to Program

Admission to the Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education is based upon:

  1. Possession of an elementary or early childhood teaching credential or the completion of a minimum of 18 units in professional course work relevant to early childhood education, including courses in child development and early childhood curriculum, and successful experience working with young children.
    or
  2. In the event the candidate has not met requirements in (1), above, he/she may meet with an Early Childhood Education adviser to evaluate his/her academic and professional background.
  3. Applicant must submit a written statement of purpose to the department graduate coordinator.
  4. Two letters of recommendation regarding the ability to pursue graduate level work and successful experience with young children.

MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION: CONCENTRATION IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Admission to Program

  1. Students accepted to the Multiple Subjects Credential program are eligible to apply to the master's degree program, after successful completion of the first semester of the credential program. A statement of purpose and two faculty recommendations are required.
  2. Students who are not currently enrolled in a SFSU Multiple Subjects Credential program must possess an elementary teaching credential or have completed a minimum of 24 semester units in professional course work directly relevant to elementary education. Applicants must submit a written statement of purpose to the department graduate coordinator plus two letters of recommendation regarding the ability to pursue graduate level work and successful experience with children.

Program

The M.A. in Education: Concentration in Elementary Education emphasizes five major strands that are germane to elementary education teaching/learning. These interrelated strands are as follows:

Opportunities are provided for students specialize in an area of interest within Elementary Education.

The balance of the student's program focuses on a selected area of interest through enrollment in elective course work on advisement. All M.A. Graduate Approved Programs must initially have the approval of the department M.A. graduate committee. Not more than six (6) units taken before admission to the M.A. program are permitted to be included on the Graduate Approved Program.
