The Alumni Association exists to advance the reputation and interests of the university, its administration, faculty, students and graduates; to engage in educational programs and special activities for its members; and to provide an ongoing link between the university and its graduates for their mutual benefit.
It is also a source of financial assistance in the form of scholarships.
Membership is open to those who (a) have been awarded a degree or credential by the university; (b) are members of the faculty or administrative staff; (c) have attended the university as a graduate student for at least two semesters; or (d) have attended the university as an undergraduate for at least two semesters. In addition, "Friends of the University" may join the Alumni Association through Affiliate membership. This membership is open to any person demonstrating an interest in San Francisco State University.
Among the current benefits of membership are privileges for use of the university Library, participation in the Alumni Job Hotline, eligibility for an Association-sponsored health plan, a subscription to the Association tabloid, Alumnews, and a variety of other discounts. Benefits are added regularly.

This unique modern structure, completed in the fall of 1975 after ten years of planning, serves as a mecca for student activities. Many organizations which enhance student life are housed in the spacious complex. The Student Center also houses needed services such as a bookstore, meeting rooms, and six separate food facilities and lounges. An Information Desk supplies a multitude of services from giving directions to selling MUNI fast passes and BART passes. Student fees help support these varied activities. The facility generates revenue from off-campus conferences and workshops. An elected governing board decides upon funding allocations, thus allowing direct student input into the Student Center operations. Elections occur every fall. Student directors are required to maintain minimum academic qualifications as specified by the Chancellor's Office to maintain their position as a director.
The center provides comfortable lounge areas for rest, relaxation, conversation, or studying. Live entertainment or movies are often scheduled in the Union Depot. Student art works and travelling exhibitions are shown in the gallery. Recreational areas are equipped with video and pinball machines, billiards, and table tennis. The Associated Students Main Desk is located on the Mezzanine Level.
The Recycling Center, a student operated organization, is the driving force in waste management at SFSU. Since the founding of the center in 1987, it has expanded its collections to over 350 recycling locations campuswide. The latest addition has been the introduction of composting into the waste reduction plan. The center is always expanding its efforts to divert higher volumes from the waste stream and to close the loop of Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. In this endeavor, the center continually works with the university administration on diversion techniques and by encouraging the use of recycled products.
The center also offers valuable working/education experience. The center employs approximately twenty students who gain job experience in management, operations, outreach, and research for recycling programs. The center also offers an extensive volunteer program for students who want experience in waste management. In addition, the Recycling Center also serves as a key resource to individuals who want to learn about environmental problems facing the world today. The center's Environmental Information Library offers vast resources on issues affecting the earth and how individuals can effect change.

Located in the Student Center, the SFSU Bookstore offers a variety of products and services. New and used textbooks, computer hardware and software, supply and electronic items, general reading books, gifts, and SFSU souvenirs can be purchased in the main store. The Bookstore also includes the Lobby Shop and Snackademic for quick convenient snacks and beverages. And to further serve the campus needs, Campus Graphics provides an array of professional design and copy services.

Studies show a positive correlation between productive involvement in student organizations/campus life and academic/career success. Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development is charged with assisting students with connecting and deepening their connection to campus life at SFSU and in developing leadership and social skills that can be applied to careers and life beyond college.
Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development assists with all student programming and student organization event programming including Residential Life event programming, Fraternity/Sorority Council advisement and fraternity and sorority event programming. In tandem with this end, OSPLD educates on process/manner/means by way of advising/direction on policies, procedures, privileges, and services. Additionally, Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development lends its support to student government (a.k.a., Associated Students Inc.), the Cesar Chavez Student Center Governing Board, and to departmental, divisional, and academic-driven events under the direction of the Division of Student Affairs. The office maintains a website at http://www.sfsu.edu/~ospld, grants public access to a library of student organization records, and acts as a publisher of lists enabling individual students to obtain contact and other information about the university's recognized student organizations. By way of completing all terms of a recognition process, student organizations are granted use of a mailbox located near HSS 102.
In conjunction with the Counseling Department of the College of Health and Human Services, Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development offers the Emerging Leaders Leadership Institute of Student Affairs (a.k.a., the ELLISA program).
ELLISA serves students and student groups as a university wide leadership umbrella which gives assistance and information to all groups and leadership programs at SFSU. The curriculum assists the individual to develop/redefine leadership skills and awareness of leadership opportunities on campus. This program is a unique opportunity for participants to increase understanding of complex social and organizational issues of the community, the corporate world, and San Francisco State University. Attendance and participation at a national or statewide leadership conference is a feature of one of the classes, entitled Emerging Leaders Conferences and Internship Class (Counseling 699). The program, as a whole, offers 4-6 courses in the Spring and Fall semesters. The fact that these units show up on transcripts, allows prospective employers to easily see proof of formal training in leadership.
In order to ensure uniform quality of information, in addition to advising at an individual level, Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development requires mandatory attendance by student organizations at an orientation at the beginning of each semester. At the Fall orientation, student organizations are given a student handbook, comprehensive introduction to policies and procedures, and instruction on how to access services including funding. Spring's orientation focuses more closely on questions, methods, and practices for acquiring organization funding and doing fundraising.
Each semester, OSPLD sponsors an Activities Fair which provides each organization with an opportunity to gain membership, raise funds, address issues, and publicize its groups through dialogue, displays, cultural events, entertainment, and contests. Watch for the publicity and join the fun.
Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development coordinates a Food Fair each semester. Evoking a village atmosphere, stationed along the two or three strips of this highly popular fair are booths from which the campus community can sample cuisine reflective of the diversity of the Bay Area and learn about student organizations/issues in the bargain. Each booth is a product of the energies of each participating student organization. The proceeds from this fair support student organization fundraising.
Office of Student Programs/Leadership Development acts as a designee for the university to ensure that access to amplified expression is fairly distributed and is conducted at a decibel level that is respectful of the overall interests of campus community as a learning environment. In particular, OSPLD handles reservations for such events on Malcolm X Plaza and at other outdoor campus locations and takes a key role in monitoring these events.
The SFSU campus provides one of the most unique fraternity/sorority systems in the country for its students. With approximately 30 member organizations, the FSC is a great outlet for student's academic, service, and social involvement. These organizations are both national and local, representing students of all backgrounds. Organizations within the council focus on specific ethnicities, traditional national organizations, and special interest groups. Associated Students Incorporated (ASI), established in 1944, is the official student body government. It functions as a non-profit, student-run corporation, and is funded by the student activity fee all students pay each semester. That fee also makes each student an Associated Students member, eligible to vote in the annual elections for AS leadership.
Associated Students provides services and programs designed to enrich campus life and helps to support many campus organizations. Its current programs and services include the following.
Children's Center. Our new state-of-the-art facility provides SFSU students, faculty, and staff with a nurturing, safe, developmentally appropriate child care program on campus for children aged six months to five years.
Crafts Festival. Held twice a year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring. The Crafts Festival brings some of the best artisans from around the state to exhibit their wares. All merchandise is chosen with quality and the student budget in mind.
Legal Resource Center. The Legal Resource Center is an informational resource that allows the student to make an informed decision about any legal problem. The center aims to educate students about the law and their rights, so that they may be active participants in their own legal matters. An attorney is available on an appointment basis to consult with students, $10 per half hour. Consultations are confidential.
Performing Arts. The Performing Arts provides the student body with a variety of concerts, sneak previews, lectures, films, and cultural events, and gives students behind-the-scenes, hands-on experience in performing arts productions.
Project Rebound. Project Rebound is a program specifically developed to assist ex-offenders in adjusting to society by acquiring an education. Rebound travels to institutions to speak to inmates, male and female, to encourage them to get an education through San Francisco State University.
Women's Center. The Women's Center provides a physical space in which every woman on campus can spend time comfortably and an atmosphere which encourages her to develop friendships with her sisters. The Women's Center also has resource files, a referral service, and a library open to all students.
The Associated Students provides many services to students. This is a partial listing. Information about these and other ASI-sponsored events is available at the Main Desk, Student Center (M106).
Health Insurance. The ASI offers a low-cost health and dental insurance plan to students.
Housing Referral. ASI offers an off-campus housing listing which students can access using a tough tone telephone, 24 hours per day free of charge, by calling (415) 338-6000. Students can list their available rentals on the housing list for a nominal charge of $5.00 with a valid SFSU I.D. card. Typing Center. The Typing Center has regularly maintained electronic typewriters available for student use. The typewriters are available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Use of the typewriters is free to students with a valid SFSU I.D. card.
San Francisco State University is readily accessible by public transportation from all parts of the Bay Area. Six San Francisco Municipal Railway bus (MUNI) and light rail lines serve the campus at 10- to 15-minute intervals. East Bay commuters have a choice of BART and connecting bus service, or BART and light rail from downtown San Francisco. Two SamTrans bus lines link the Peninsula and the San Francisco Airport with the campus.
San Francisco State University operates several free shuttle services. One shuttle bus runs between the Daly City BART station and campus. The bus stops at Lot 4/Library, Lot 6/Humanities, Lot 8, Diagnostic Center, and Lot 25. The shuttle operates from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday during the Fall and Spring semesters. Free shuttle service is also provided between the campus and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. The Golden Gate shuttle departs from the bridge at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m.; and then, from campus at 12:00 noon, 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Golden Gate shuttle also picks up at the MUNI 29 stop (Lincoln/Pershing) Presidio/Wherry Housing complex. The shuttle picks up at 7:35 a.m., 8:35 a.m., 9:35 a.m., and 12:35 p.m. and drops off on 19th Avenue and Holloway. Return trips to the Presidio/Wherry complex leave from 19th Avenue at 12:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. The Bay Bridge shuttle departs from the toll plaza at 7:10 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 9:10 a.m., and 12:45 p.m.; and then, departs from campus at 12:00 noon, 3:10 p.m., 4:10 p.m., and 5:10 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Bike Barn provides secure bicycle parking with all day attendants. Hours of operation are: Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. The Bike Barn is located under the gym in Lot 6.
The campus is a typical urban setting and parking on surrounding streets is very limited. Approximately 3,000 spaces are available on a first-come basis for a $2.00 daily fee in the general parking garage, located on the east side of Lake Merced Boulevard between Font and Winston Drive and Lot 25, which is located on Winston Drive between Lake Merced and Buckingham Way. Fees are $2.00 a day. Lot 25 has an "Early Bird Special" with a daily permit costing only $1.00 if the permit is purchased by 9:00 a.m. Parking permit dispensers accept coins, one dollar bills, debit cards, and credit cards. Debit cards for Lot 20 and Lot 25 can be purchased for $20 at the Lot 20 and Lot 25 kiosks, Parking and Transportation office, and Bursar's Office. The campus shuttle serves Lot 25 every 15 to 20 minutes.
In addition to daily parking, SFSU offers short-term parking at key locations on campus. Metered parking is available in Lot 2, on State Drive, and on North State Drive.
Assistance with local transportation schedules and information is provided at the Student Center Information Desk and the Parking and Transportation Department. Both serve as a clearinghouse for information on carpools, public transportation, shuttle schedules, and parking.
