200 level courses: Explorations in the various areas of the art department. They are designed to serve as prerequisite experiences for upper division work.

The conceptual and technical relationship of visual form to values of the ancient and medieval periods in Europe. [CAN ART 2]

The conceptual and technical relationship of visual form to values of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo periods.
203 Modern Art History (3)
Priority enrollment given to art majors. The conceptual and technical relationship of visual form to values of the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and America, from Romanticism to the Contemporary period.
204 Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (3) [GE]
An introductory survey of the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Slide lectures stress methodology for studying non-western cultures and the diverse values and socio-political systems that produced the art.
205 Asian Art History (3)
The conceptual and technical relationship of visual form to values in the art of China, Korea, Japan, India, Tibet, and South East Asia. (Also offered as HUM 205.)

247 Exploration in Glass (3)
Studio experiences correlating glass media with basic techniques such as stained glass, glass slumping and fusing, and an introduction to glass blowing. Extra fee required. Laboratory.
260 Exploration in Photography (3) [GE]
Basic introduction to black and white film processing and printing. Assignments structured to develop students' awareness of photography as art. 303 The Artist in the 20th Century: Cultures in Collision—Cultures in Fusion (3) [GE]
A multi-cultural, multi-ethnic overview of selected topics in Twentieth century art. Examines the ways in which artists have moved out of their own cultural frameworks and have borrowed from a multitude of cultural sources and the ways in which non-European artists have provided alternative creative expressions.
305 Photography and Society (3)
A study of society and culture as reflected and influenced by still and moving photography. The impact of the film image on the development of intellectual information in the 19th and 20th centuries.
360 Color Transparencies (3)
Introduction to the use of color transparency materials including film types, exposure testing, color balance, copy slides. Analysis of the photograph as art and information. Cameras and film provided by students.
400 level courses: Designed as basic disciplines within the various professional areas of the art department. College level studio experiences and commitment in the discipline are required.
402 History of Architecture (3)
Prerequisite: ART 201, 202, 203, or equivalent. The interplay of function, structure, and form during the major periods of world art with emphasis on modern architecture.
404 Late Antiquity and Medieval Art and Architecture (3)
Prerequisite: ART 201, 202, 203, or equivalent. Painting, sculpture, architecture, and the other arts in Europe between late Antiquity and the Renaissance.
405 Art, Literature, and Power in the Renaissance (3)
Prerequisite: ART 201, or 202, or equivalent. European Renaissance and Baroque art and literature examined in terms of power structures affecting all aspects of culture and society. Case studies of social, political, cultural, and religious contexts of specific works. (Also offered as HUM 405.)
406 Renaissance Art (3)
Prerequisite: ART 201, 202, 203, or equivalent. A study of the painting, sculpture, and architecture of the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries in Italy and Northern Europe.
408 Baroque and Rococo Art (3)
Prerequisite: ART 201, 202, 203, or equivalent. A study of the painting, sculpture, and architecture of seventeenth and eighteenth century Europe. Topics include the impact of the Counter-Reformation and the rise of modern nation states on seventeenth century art, and the political undercurrents in eighteenth century art.
410 Conceptual Strategies I (3)
Prerequisites: upper division standing and/or consent of instructor. Must be taken concurrently with ART 412. Priority enrollment given to art majors. Artmaking with an emphasis on conceptual strategies: listing, indexing, icons, language, chance, etc. Introduction to computers in art production. Extra fee required. Laboratory.
412 Computer Applications in Conceptual Design I (3)
Prerequisite: upper division standing. Must be taken concurrently with ART 410. Priority enrollment given to art majors. Focus on using the digital computer as a design tool through programming to create and manipulate graphic imagery. Programming graphic, sound, and text events. No mathematical or computer background required. Extra fee required.
422 Textiles I (3)
Prerequisite: ART 222 or equivalent. Introductory experiences in basic weaving techniques using four harness looms. May be repeated for a total of six units under advisement. Extra fee required. Laboratory.
424 Surface Design I (3)
Prerequisite: ART 224 or equivalent. Fundamental surface design techniques on fabric for producing two- and three-dimensional forms. May be repeated for a total of six units on advisement. Extra fee required. Laboratory.
425 Metal Arts and Jewelry I (3)
Prerequisite: ART 225 or equivalent. Materials, tools, and techniques of contemporary jewelry. Methods of fabricating, casting, enameling, lapidary, and electro-forming. May be repeated for a total of six units. Extra fee required. Laboratory.

548 Glaze Calculations (3)
Prerequisite: ART 545 or consent of instructor. Covers glazes, clay bodies, kiln design, firing techniques and includes workshop experience involving the actual application and development of glazing techniques. Extra fee required.

Research, design, and development of visual material for instructional purposes. Exhibition techniques. Concurrent enrollment permitted in two different sections of the Art Production Series (509, 519, 539, 549, 559, 569). A total of four units from this Series may be taken for credit. Laboratory.
