HUM 445 : German-Jewish Ferment 1920s-1950s

Prerequisites: ENG 214 or equivalent.
Description: Despite the increasingly hostile political climate in Germany, the period from 1920-1950 was particularly fertile for German-Jewish intellectuals, writers, artists. Those studied will include Kafka, Frankfurt School figures (Adorno, Horkheimer), Arendt, Marcuse, Lowith, Benjamin, Hans Jonas, Fromm, Weill. (Cross listed with GER 611/JS 545/PHIL 420. May not be repeated under alternate prefix.)
