| Description: |
English poetry started the 17th century divided into three schools: the Spenserians tried to retain a healthy amount of medieval romance; the Jonsonians imitated classical models with stress on
formal precision and neatness; the Metaphysicals startled the reader with a kind of ingenious madness. Then a group of courtier poets, the Cavaliers, tried to combine the content of the
Metaphysicals with the form of the Jonsonians.
