Research Interests:
My research interests focus on the evolution and diversity of mushrooms. I am finishing a systematic study of the Agaricales of the Hawaiian Islands with colleague Dr. Don Hemmes (Univ. Hawaii Hilo) and a survey of the mushrooms and other allied fungi from Java and Bali with colleague Dr. Egon Horak (Geobotanisches Institut ETH, Zürich, Switzerland). Both of these projects are funded by the Biotic Surveys and Inventories Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF). I have begun a project to study the marasmioid and mycenoid mushrooms of southeast Asia as part of a PEET grant (Partnerships for the Enhancement of Expertise in Taxonomy) from NSF. Graduate and undergraduate students are active participants in all projects which includes extensive field studies in the Pacific and throughout southeast Asia. The PEET project is specifically designed to fund and train US and foreign students in fungal systematics. Because SFSU is centrally located in California and within several hours of numerous different ecosystems that support the growth of fleshy fungi, my lab is actively involved in documenting the diversity, ecology and evolutionary relationships of California mushrooms.

Graduate students in my lab are currently studying the genus Clitocybe and the family Strophariaceae from California, the genus Crinipellis from Southeast Asia, and the worldwide representatives of the genus Tetrapyrgos. In addition, I have four PhD students who live and conduct their research in Asia. Their projects include: the genus Marasmius from Malaysia (Univ. Malaya, Kuala Lumpur); the genus Mycena from Thailand (Ramkhamhaeng Univ., Bangkok); the genus Marasmius from northern Thailand (Chiang Mai Univ.), and the genus Lactarius from northern Thailand and Vietnam (Chiang Mai Univ.).

My colleague Dr. Kevin Hyde, Univ. of Hong Kong, and I have recently built the Mushroom Research Centre in the forest about one hour NW of Chiang Mai. We have interred 4 PhD students at the Centre who are conducting fungal systematics research towards their doctoral degrees from Chiang Mai University. For more information about the Centre and for opportunities to study and conduct research there, see our website at: http://www.mushroomresearchcentre.net/
