SFSU Closed Captioning Information
Captioning of media can be encoded in one of two ways:
Closed captions: are encoded into the videotape or DVD and are not viewable until a closed caption decoder is turn on.
Subtitles: On some DVDs, english subtitles are used. They are displayed either by pressing a button on the DVD remote or selecting the subtitles through the DVD menu. There is no industry standard for activating subtitles, that is, sometimes the subtitle button will not activate the feature, the subtitles must be selected before playback begins.
We recommend that media be tested on our system to verify captioning encoded on it and that it plays back properly.
To play captioned media using the VCR/DVD player in the classroom:
The classrooms listed below have a closed caption decoder installed in the console or utilize an LCD TV with a closed caption decoder built in. The captioning is activated with a switch (on or off). Please make sure the captioning is turned OFF after use.

Classroom with a TV or video projection system can receive these broadcasts.

Cablecast: If a faculty wishes to present closed captioning they must indicate on the cablecast form that they need it broadcast on a channel with a closed caption decoder.
In addition, we have several TV/VCR and multimedia carts that have decoders
on them which can be rolled into classrooms.
