VHS Camcorder Tutorial

While I hesitate to do an online tutorial for camcorders because NOTHING can replace a hands-on demonstration, there are some basics I can describe here.

Our VHS camcorders use standard VHS cassettes like you use at home. There is no special brand I recommend, but it is always a safe bet to buy a brand you recognize. Don't spend more than 3 or 4 dollars unless it's a once in a lifetime situation that you will want to watch over and over (in which case I would recommend making a copy of the master and watch that).

What I'll be describing here is the location and use of the essential buttons, switches and controls for our camcorders.

power switch

The power switch is on the top.

It slides back and a little red light comes on.

cover open

The tape eject button is the little blue button right above the battery compartment. Press it, and the panel on the right side opens and you slide in the tape.

Directly above it is a plate that slides up and down. In this position, you can control playback of the tape after you've recorded.

cover closed When the cover plate is closed, the camera goes into "Record/Pause" mode. That means it's ready to go.
on off button

Press the red button (white arrow) to start and stop recording.
The red arrow indicates where you can plug in headphones to monitor your audio.

zoom button

The red arrow indicates the zoom control. Press forward to zoom, back for wide shots. The white arrow indicates a second start/stop recording button.

auto swtich

The left side has a rather bewildering array of buttons.

The switch marked is the auto/manual setting. Keep it on auto. Trust me.
