European ethnographer Jean Rouch recorded this ceremony of the Hauku, a West African religious movement popular in Niger and Ghana from the 1920s to the 1950s. During this annual ritual participants enter a trance, possessed by spirits associated with We stern colonial powers. Thus the film documents a European looking at Africans looking at Europeans.
