Although written documents recount more than 350 years of events in America, they reveal little of everyday life. Historical archaeologists such as James Deetz at a California coal mine, Charles Fairbanks at a Georgia plantation, and urban archaeologists at Roxbury and Cambridge, Massachusetts, are uncovering a clearer, and often very different, story of our recent past.
