In 1848 James Marshall noticed a glimmer in Californias American River near Sutters sawmill, a chance discovery that triggered the California Gold Rush. The inventive ways people used to become rich, the roles of women, African Americans, Nat ive Americans and immigrants, the new high-risk entrepreneurialism it fostered, were all part of this reshaping of the American dream. Produced and directed by Steven Boettcher and Michael Trinklein; narrated by John Lithgow. See also DVD, AT # 67500.
