The ensuing violence in India and Pakistan left 5,000 dead and caused thousands of Muslims to flee India. Hind u fundamentalists, led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad ( VHP ) claimed the mosque had been built by Babar, the first Mughal Emperor of India, after destroying a temple to Ram, a Hindu deity believed to be born at the site.
