In August, 1942, Jose Diaz, a young Mexican American, man was murdered at Sleepy Lagoon in Los Angeles. Seventeen young men, known as " zoot-suiters " for their clothing style, were convicted of the crime, despite a lack of evidence. Tensions continued to build until in the summer of 1943 full scale riots broke out between servicemen, supported by white civilians, and Mexican American youths.
