The poliomyelitis virus was first found in the United States in 1916. By the end of the 20th century the virus and the disease it caused, infantile paralysis, had virtually disappeared. This PBS video chronicles the history of polio in the United States, from the first cases through the nationwide epidemics of the 40s and 50s, the discovery of the Salk and Sabin vaccines to the continuing effort to eliminate the virus around the world. Written and directed by Nina Gilden Seavey; narrated by Olympia Duka kis.
