Barbara Kopple’s award-winning documentary chronicles the efforts of 180 coal-mining families to win a United Mine Workers contract at the Brookside mine in Harlan County, Kentucky. The year-long strike began in 1974 after the miners voted to join t he U.M.W. This was the first major confrontation in Harlan County since the bloody union organizing battles of the 1930’s.
