Banking on Disaster (OC)

Digital Video Disc - 1 hour, 19 minutes - Color - 1987

In the 1980s impoverished farmers from southern Brazil were relocated to Rondonia, in western Brazil. Highways were built to this remote region, native peoples displaced and large sections of rainforest destroyed, burned to make way for agriculture. But with no experience on tropical lands, the farms soon failed. This production follows colonist Renato Ferreria, tracing these disastrous efforts, funded by the World Bank, to establish farms in the Amazon rainforest. Presented in three 25-minute segments ; the slightly longer part 3 includes comments by rubber tapper and activist Chico Mendes. Filmmaker Adrian Cowell. Central Independent Television. Open captioned.
