In 1810 a Khoi Khoi woman sailed from Capetown, South Africa, and into European popular culture as Sara Baartman, the Hottentot Venus. Exhibited as a freak in Britain and taken to France as a research subject, Baartman became an icon of black female sexu alty - but never saw Africa again.
