In 1810 a Khoi Khoi woman sailed from Capetown, South Africa, and into European popular culture as Sara Baartman, the Hottentot Venus. Exhibited as a freak in Britain and taken to France as a research subject, Baartman became an icon of black female sexu alty - but never saw Africa again. This video by Zola Maseko traces Baartmans tragic life and the racist assumptions which plagued her, even in death. Dominant 7, Mail & Guardian Television, Dola Bill Productions, SABC 2 - 1998.
