During the 1930s journalists and writers from the Federal Writers Project interviewed hundreds of surivivng African American former slaves, transcribing these first-hand accounts of slavery in the vernacular of the times. In this HBO program Angela Basse tt, Don Cheadle, Ozzie Davis, Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and others read these narraives, giving voice to their compelling memories of pain, suffering, fear, pride and sadness. DVD includes audio interviews.
