In 1899 railroad tycoon Edward Henry Harriman invited writers, scientists and artists to explore Alaska coastline. In 2001 writers, scientists and artists from Smith College retraced the route of the Harriman Expedition, charting changes in Alaskas environment, economy and social structures since the first expedition, including the effects of the Cold War, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, global warming, tourism and the recent prosperity of native peoples.
