Classroom Expectations: Early Field Experience

This course is designed to introduce undergraduate students to elementary school teaching and to community service through intensive preparation in the principles and practices of effective tutoring in reading. Emphasis is on helping third grade students develop skill in reading expository text. Particular attention is paid to the role of the tutor as facilitator of student learning. Tutors also acquire an understanding of the school as a community, the relationship of the school to the wider community, and the professional, ethical, and moral responsibilities of the classroom teacher.

Course Expectations

Attendance and active participation in all EED 646 class meetings (45 hours).

Completion of all assignments.

Satisfactory evaluation, by school site mentor and professor, of one-on-one tutoring of assigned 3rd grade students 9 hours per week.

Attendance at all scheduled meetings with university liaison and/or school site mentor.
