Welcome to Arab and Muslim Ethinicities and Diasporas Initiative (AMED)
Housed in the historic College of Ethnic Studies at SFSU, the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas Initiative, (AMED), is committed to a justice-centered perspective that is essential to the study of Arab and Muslim Diasporic communities. AMED departs from the dominant trend of area studies that view Arabs and Muslims as members of foreign communities in a confined geographical area. Instead, we view Arabs and Muslims as organic members of the larger communities of color within the US, in the Americas, and transnationally across other Diasporas.
Our academic program offers courses in Arab and Muslim Diasporas Studies at the graduate and undergraduate levels to reflect the realities of Arab and Muslim communities. This makes it possible for our youth to critically study the lived experiences of their ancestors as they challenge the continuing legacies of Anti-Arab discrimination, Islamophobia, and all forms of racism and discrimination through critical thinking and rigorous pedagogy.
