The ALI is a small program (about 150 students per semester) which offers lots of individual attention from teachers and advisors. Class size ranges from 12 to 20, with average size between 15 and 18. The 22 hour per week program includes courses in reading and writing, oral communication skills (listening and speaking), grammar, and (at the higher levels) elective courses such as cross-cultural communication or pronunciation. Classes are taught by a highly trained, internationally recognized teaching staff.
The ALI offers 4 proficiency levels from low intermediate (TOEFL 325 and above) to advanced (TOEFL 520-600). Institutional TOEFL tests are offered at the beginning and end of each semester. Please note that the ALI does not have a beginning level course.
All students should have had some formal study of English before applying to the program. Also, students with TOEFL scores of over 600 on the initial placement examination will be counseled to seek other study opportunities in advanced academic programs. Classes are intended for serious, mature and self-directed students with academic or professional goals.
