HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus
AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome:
* People living with HIV/AIDS, worldwide, end of 2004: over 40 million
* People newly infected with HIV, worldwide, 2004: 5 million
* AIDS deaths, worldwide, over 4,000,000 (4 million )
* Women now account for nearly 50% of all HIV/AIDS cases in the world. In Africa it is well over 50%.
* Over half of the new HIV infections worldwide are in PEOPLE YOUNGER THAN 25
* Over 15 million children have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS.
* In addition, well over 10 million young people ages 15 – 24 are living with HIV in the world today.
* People living with HIV/AIDS, U.S., end of 2004: 850,000 to 950,000
* People newly infected with HIV in the U.S. each year: 40,000 - 60,000
* In California over 80,000 have died from HIV/AIDS.
* In San Francisco alone, over 20,000 people have died from HIV/AIDS.
* African Americans in the U.S. are being especially hard hit by HIV
* Although they make-up only 12% of the population, they account for over 50% of all HIV/AIDS cases in the U.S.
* Latinos in the U.S. are also over represented; Latinos make up 14% of the general population and 20% of the HIV/AIDS infections in US
* Whites represent and 68% of the general population and 26% of new HIV infections in the U.S.
