Advanced Placement Tests
AP Scores
The good news about English or Math AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 is that you will earn units and meet GE requirements. Here's how:
- I took AP English Composition and scored 3 or higher.
- I took AP English Literature and scored 3 or higher.
- I took AP Calculus AB and scored 3 or higher.
- I took AP Statistics and scored 3 or higher.
- I have other AP Scores of 3 or above.
- What if I am taking an AP exam in May?
If you took a high level International Baccalaureate (IB)
and received a passing score, your tests will be treated similarly to
AP scores above. Remember, to receive college credit SF State
Admissions must have an official certificate of IB
scores. Contact College Board to request this.

Congratulations! You earn 6 units of credit toward graduation. You also will not need to take English 114 (Freshman composition) and ENG 214 (sophmore composition) because you have met the requirements with this test.
If you feel like you want to take English or writing courses don't worry. There are other choices within GE which will give you writing practice.
BACK to TOPI took AP English Literature and scored 3 or higher.

If you are a science major, this test score means you have taken the equivalent class of MATH 226 (calculus 1).
I took AP Statistics and scored 3 or higher.
Congratulations! You earn 3 units of credit toward graduation. You also will not need to take Quantitative Reasoning (GE math) because you have met it with this test score.
This test score means you have taken the equivalent class of MATH
124 (Elementary Statistics).
I took other AP Tests and scored 3 or higher.
Bring your unofficial test transcripts to Orientation to see what credit you will receive for AP or IB tests. AP and IB official documents must be on file to receive college credit. As sooon as you have a high score request the proof to come to Admissions.
In general you will receive 3-6 units of college credit for passing scores on Advanced Placement or IB tests. Reminder! No credit will be given for the AP class.
How are these credits used? If you have a general Education class, such as Biology, then your AP credit can count for that requirement. Be sure to bring your personal transcripts from College Board and we can go over it with you on your orientation day.
