General Education

Overview 2

Thus far, your class schedule planner could look like this:

English: 3 units (depends on your English Placement)

Math: 3-4 units (depending on which math course your placement dictates)

Oral Communication (COMM 150): 3 units

or

Critical Thinking (PHIL 110): 3 units

for a total of 9-10 units. What else could I take?

GE at SFSU consists of 12 units of Segment I and 27 units of Segment II. Choose a Segment II course, maybe one related to the major you wish to pursue. Also, another course could be a US History and/or US Government.

What's Next?

So now your schedule might include 3 classes: English, Math and a Segment I GE course. What's next?

That depends, do you need...?

  1. Major courses - some majors have lower-division courses that you MUST begin in 1st semester.
  2. US Hist/Gov't - a course to meet the United States History and Government requirements?
  3. Segment II - more general education courses to meet graduation requirements?
