How Registration Times Work

by Crystal, Angelina and Alfe Claire
This FYI is all about registration; can you believe it?
It's time to register for classes! Unlike summer orientation where you were able to register for up to16 units at one time, from now on, you will be participating in our two tiered registration system. What does this mean? We have an early priority registration and final priority registration time for students to register, depending on class level and units earned.
Next week, around Nov 14, you will get an email telling you to check your registration times and dates. Remember to keep track of these two dates! During your early priority registration (EPR), you are allowed to register for up to 8 units and during your final priority registration (FPR), you are allowed to register for up to 16 units.
From the start of your EPR registration, you have 24 hours to change your schedule, however, the system closes at midnight and reopens at 8 am.
General Tips for GatorReg
by Skye and Jason

If you remember your orientation in the summer, the GatorAiders presented a workshop on GatorReg. As a refresher, GatorReg is the site in which you register for your classes. To access GatorReg, log onto SFSU Gateway, click on schedule/classes on the left-side of the page under Students, scroll down, and select GatorReg.
Keep in mind three important tips when registering for your classes
1) Have The correct 5-digit Schedule Number:
This number specifies the course's time, location, professor, and section. One wrong number and you could accidentally sign up for the wrong course!
2) Have Many Backups:
Be sure to plan ahead by writing down several back up classes, and several backup schedules. This way, you will have other courses to fall back on if you do not receive your first choice. Remember, thousands of other students will be registering at the same time, so spots will fill up fast! You do not want to be frantically looking for courses to take during your registration period; not only are you wasting time, you might end up making mistakes such as taking a class you do not actually need or choosing a course you will not enjoy! Don't be that guy!
3) Be Wary of Overlapping Times:
GatorReg does not prevent students from signing up for courses that have corresponding times. For instance, you may sign up for two different classes that start at the exact same time on the exact same day, but obviously, you cannot be in two places at once. GatorReg does not catch this error, so be sure double check your schedule to avoid making this mistake.
Have a Registration Strategy!

by Melissa, Corinne, and Lori
Registration is right around the corner, have you thought about what classes to sign up for?
Something to note is that you want to be smart about those first eight units you pick for EPR. There are some classes that are very high demand and also offer limited sections, such as science classes and labs that can fill up very quickly and be all gone by the time your FPR rolls around. Here are some quick tips to help you decide which classes you want to enroll in first and which classes to wait for until FPR:
EPR
* Major and minor pre-requisites can be very high demand, especially if they correspond with GE requirements, so grab those as soon as you can.
* Critical thinking, communications, English and math are very important GE classes to take because they will be a pre-requisite for many other GE as well as major classes you plan to take in the future.
* Another thing to note are that science classes and labs fill up very quickly, so if there are no classes relating to your major or minor in the GE section, heavily consider taking these classes.
FPR
* Classes that have many sections can be saved for FPR, especially if you are flexible with your schedule.
* Segment II classes as well as History and Government classes can be saved for this area as well.
* Any pre-major classes that aren’t in GE.
Good luck with registration!
Avoid Common Registration Pitfalls
by Kimberly and Viktoriya
For First Time Freshman, registration can be a daunting task. You can avoid some of the pitfalls freshmen fall into…
Registration Times
It's imperative to know when your registration time is and to make sure that you register at that time. The longer you wait after your time starts, the more students have access to GatorReg.
Planning Ahead
Frequently, freshman are not prepared when they register. Instead of immediately typing in the schedule numbers for desired classed, they are looking for classes to add. This is a bad strategy because high demand classes will fill up in a matter of minutes. Such a mistake can cost you time… even delay graduation! Always make at least three ideal schedules for classes you want to take.
Checking Prerequisites
Always check prerequisites for classes when you are registering to make sure that you qualify for the classes. If not qualified, either GatorReg doesn't allow you to add or the professor will drop you. If you select the name of the class in the online class schedule, prerequisite information appears.
We hope these suggestions will help you get on the right track for graduation. Good luck registering!
I’m taking Math 60 this semester…What do I take next?

by Roxanne, Sarah, Natalie, and Ashley
If you are passing MATH 60 with a "C" or better, then you should be prepared to add MATH 70 for Spring 2013. If you have no concern about what time you want to take the class, go ahead and addMath 70 during Final Priority Registration(FPR) to make way for other classes, like maybe a major or Segment I GE class. However, if you want the best options for class times, add the class during Early Priority Registration (EPR).
If you are NOT passing MATH 60with a "C or better, you will have to add Math 60 for Spring 2013 and make absolutely sure that you take a MATH 70 equivalent class during the Sumer 2013. There is an academic policy, Executive Order 665, also known as the “One Year Rule” that sates that all remedial classes must be completed, with passing grades, within the first year of attending SFSU. If you do not finish your remedial courses within your first year, you will have a registration hold and it can only be cleared after you complete and fulfill your remediation.
Whatever math you are in, get help by using our free tutoring!
Any questions about remediation rule? Contact advising@sfsu.edu
Are you taking/passing ENG 104 class right now?
If you are taking and passing ENG 104 class this semester, you then must take ENG 105 in the Spring. It must be the same section number and instructor as your current ENG 104 class.
For example, if you are currently taking Eng 104.3 this semester, then you MUST register for Eng 105.3 for the Spring.
Registering for the same section is crucial! There is no switching around sections allowed. If you do it, you will be dropped. You may add the class during Final Priority Registration, so plan to do so.
Keep your schedule planned with that course time in mind.

by Alexis & Marion
It is that time again...that time to register for classes! There are a lot of GE classes to choose from, but how do you know which classes count as GE requirements?
Simple!
Go to SF State Home Page
The Bulletin is a Quick Link on the right hand side of the home page.
When you select Go, you will be redirected to the 2012-2013 SF State Online Bulletin.
Click on the "Table of Contents" link on the left hand side.
Below "Undergraduate Information," you'll find many links. To find the courses that fulfill GE requirements, click the links for Segment I and II. (Segment III courses are for students who have completed at least 30 units of GE, so don't select this for Spring.)
Under Segment I and II, you'll find all of the classes that satisfy GE requirements. Since you are a freshman, you'll want to consider the course numbers that are between 100 and 299, which are considered to be lower-division courses. For example, SCI 140 or ANTH 100
The Bulletin shows every GE choice, but not all of these courses are available for next semester. For available course listings, refer to the online class schedule. http://www.sfsu.edu/online/clssch.htm
Have a great rest of the semester!
What if I'm not passing a class?
by Michelle K, Victory and Erika
First things first... Set up a meeting with your professor to talk about it and go over options on ways that you can possibly pass the class.
After that, if you need more help, speak to a counselor from the Advising Center about your options: withdrawing, repeating or taking the low passing grade for graduation.
Sometimes you may have "serious and compelling" reasons for not attending a course. You may elect to withdraw. You must attach proof to a petition at this time.
Should I repeat the class? Let's say you're taking ENG 114 and you're not doing so well. Keep in mind that this is an essential class to graduate from SFSU. For this particular class, you must pass with a "C" or bette (most classes it's a "D" or better.) If you know you're not going to pass the class with a C or better then please make this a priority to retake for next semester. You are only allowed to repeat a class once.
Another scenario: you are taking PSY 200 for GE. You have a D in the class and you're not sure if this is passing or not. Best advice is to seek an advisor and ask. In this situation it might be acceptable especially since you're not a psychology major and it will fulfill your segment 2 part of your BSS (Behavior and Social Sciences) requirement.
In any of the above cases, it is our best advice, see someone and ask for help!
Good Luck!

Yes it has happened to me. In Spring '12 I changed my major after I had registered for my EPR (early priority registration) classes. These classes no longer applied to me and so I had to drop them and wait until FPR (final priority registration) to add classes relevant to my major. I looked at the classes I needed daily, watching the seats fill up and a knot started to develop in my stomach.
I ended up not being able to get a crucial, introductory major class that I really needed. So I had to crash. I thought that it was going to be okay. Since it was an introductory class I didn't think many seniors would be crashing and I would have a chance. I was wrong. The first day seniors took all the permit numbers my professor had brought with her. She said there wasn't much of a chance of anyone else getting in, but I decided to come back the next day as well. Everyone was present and she said she wouldn't add anyone again. I decided to try again, and again, and again.
I kept up with all the homework, sat in the front of the classroom, talked to her everyday after class and didn't take no for an answer. Finally my persistence paid off and I was added to the class three weeks later when I was given a late-add permit number. That knot in my stomach finally went away.
In case you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to crash classes here are some tips:
-Once you know the class you want is full, email the professor beforehand to show you are interested.
-Be polite, but persistent. Don't give up, but don't be obnoxious about staying in the class either. There may come a time where you need to just plan on taking the class the following semester.
-Make sure your professor knows who you are. Participate in class, sit in the front, and talk to your professor after class.
- Do all the homework. It shows your dedication to the class. Even if you don't get the class, you have a headstart for next semester.
Good luck!
Science Majors… REMEMBER THIS!
By Monet and Sunny
Hey Science Majors! How was your first semester? Did you get the classes you needed or met with an advisor yet? Well here are some tips to help you succeed for the upcoming Spring 2013 semester:
Tip 1: Meet with your Major Advisor!
If you haven’t yet, try to meet with you major advisor by next semester and have some idea of what you want to ask and take in the future semesters. Have no idea? That’s okay, that is what they are there for. Meeting with your major advisors will give that insight of what to take in the following semesters and layout a plan for you.
Remember some majors have Mandatory Advising. You should have received an email from them about this. Unless you meet with them you cannot add classes for spring!
Tip 2: What MATH is next?
Depending on your major you will need to take the Math 226 – Calculus I or Math 124 – Elementary Statistics path.
If you need to take Math 226 for you major you’ll need to follow this path.
Math 60* --> Math 70* --> Math 109* --> Math 226
* Only if needed. Some of you may have entered with an ELM Exemption or a passing ELM score to qualify you into Math 226. Remember Math 226 also requires you to take Precalculus or a Trigonometry course in high school with a B or better.
If you need to take Math 124 for you major you’ll need to follow this path.
Math 60* --> Math 70* --> Math 124
*Only if needed. You can go straight into Math 124 if your ELM score qualifies you for Quantitative Reasoning.
Tip 3: CHEM 115
As some you have experienced already, this class fills up really quick. If you are ready and eligible for CHEM 115, meeting all the requirements then Spring 2013 is when you want to sign up for it. You want to register for this class during EPR time - remember, it's a 5-unit course!
If you haven’t already taken the required CHEM 115 Pre-Test, here are the following dates. The next two opportunities to register for this test are Nov. 23rd and Jan. 18th. You can check on the testing center’s website for more information. http://www.sfsu.edu/~testing/
Tip 4: Grab Open Labs during EPR
Getting a lab spot is often times harder then getting into the lecture portion for that lab. If you have the opportunity to get into the lab during EPR, you have a high chance of getting into lecture during FPR.
Tip 5: STUDY TIME
Keep in mind these are rigorous classes. Labs are 3 hours at a time up to twice a week. When choosing your schedule remember to balance your outside obligations and school work. A semester can consist of up to 20 hours or more of class time, and sometimes requires twice the time to receive a good passing grade. Plan out your schedule accordingly.
Business majors… remember this!

by Michelle and Lulu
Our registration season for spring semester is coming soon. All concentrations of Business should keep this in mind when planning out your major classes.
Business Resource Center for Advising! Visit BUS 112 for help with any major questions.
Remember there are two parts of economics; Microeconomics (ECON 101) and Macroeconomics (ECON 102). These courses also satisfy part of the the Segment II - Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS) requirement. You need a passing grade for both ECON 101 and 102 in order to take upper division courses.
Take advantage of free tutoring on campus. For example, the ECON department has free tutoring. See this link: http://cob.sfsu.edu/cob/economics/resources/tutoring
If you are passing Math 70, the Quantitative Reasoning course for Business majors is either MATH 110 OR DS 110.
Note: Hospitality majors ONLY, need to take HTM 110 and then you may register for HTM 120
Good luck with midterms, finals, and registration!
