Frequently Asked Questions About Early Start at SF State
Where can I find information regarding Early Start on the CSU web pages?
Here is the link: http://www.csusuccess.org/earlystart
If I don’t take any early start classes at SF State or anywhere else this summer, can I still attend SF State?
You must Early Start by registering, paying and taking a summer class either at SF State or at another campus. (Note: you must take the English course at SF State.)
Students who are not exempted from ESP but did not fulfill the ESP requirement will not be allowed to attend SF State.
Can I be exempted from the Early Start Program?
If you have been identified to participate in the Early Start Program during summer 2013, you may only be exempted if a new test score on the ELM, EPT, SAT, ACT or AP exam removes this requirement. Once you have successfully completed (C or better grade) at a community college or University level a beginning or intermediate algebra course or a college level math course you have satisfied the Early Start requirement for Math. Once you have completed our ESE 99 English class at SF State you have satisfied the Early Start requirement for English.
How do I register for the Early Start Program courses at SF State?
Detailed instructions for adding classes will appear on this website later. Return in April or May to view instructions. For now, test EARLY on ELM and EPT, in order to determine your Early Start status.
How much will Early Start courses cost?
Early Start 1 unit class (there is a 1 unit English class and a chioce of a 1 unit math course) fee is $182 per unit, plus $2 campus fee. 3 unit math classes on campus will cost substantially more.
California residents who apply for financial aid and have an Estimated Family Contribution of $5,000 or less will be eligible for a partial or full waiver of the fee.
Can I appeal if I cannot do Early Start this summer?
Students may email ilp@sfsu.edu and consult about an appeal for Early Start. Students must prove "serious and compelling reasons" to not be able to take a math course. The 1 unit English is available, and therefore all students must take our English course.
If I am planning to attend SF State but miss the deadline to enroll in any of the SF State Early Start Math course what can I do?
You may early start in Math at any other CSU or CC or private college/university.

Upon
completion of an elementary or intermediate algebra course or college
level math course at a two or four year college or university you will
have early started. Remember to send a transcript to SF State
Admissions and remember to keep a copy of the grade report/transcripts
for your own records.
If I take a higher-level Math or English course at a CC or a four-year college/university than what my ELM placement, can I advance to a higher level math or English course?
Yes. This is possible depending on the course completed. If you
are able to enroll in a college level math course, you may email Early Start
beginning in May regarding equivalency questions. Our email is early@sfsu.edu.
For
English, SF State has no remedial English. Therefore if you take and
complete ESE 99 at SF State, you will be adding a college level course.
Thus we encourage students to only take our English Early Start and not
add English elsewhere.
If I don’t receive a passing grade in an Early Start Math and/or English course will I fulfilled the requirement to "early start"?
You need to add a course, pay for the course, begin the course and do your best to compelte the course. If you receive a No Credit grade but did your best attempt (based on teacher feedback) you have completed Early Start.
