Words from some of our winners:
“I felt very honored to receive the Alumni Scholarship award, I know I was one of many, many qualified applicants. I didn't realize how special it was, though, until I attended the Alumni Scholarship dinnerj…. I am currently in the depths of my Master's degree in Conservation Biology, working hard and continuously to come up with the right methodology for my upcoming field season. I expect to be defending my thesis this December and the scholarship I received from the Alumni Association has helped my tremendously. With the extra financial support, I have been able to focus more on what is important, my studies, than spending my time worrying about making ends meet.”
Tara Cornelisse, Alum of the Year Scholarship
“I have been able to continue my studies thanks to the Alumni Scholarship Fund and I cannot express in words how thankful I am that there are admirable donors who have granted me the help I needed. My future plans include going abroad in the Peace Corps to help businesses flourish in undeveloped countries. This will happen within the next six months and I am excited to begin.
Thank you once again”
Edward Pakdaman, graduate winner in International Business
“It gave me the necessary boost to move forward in my career. I anticipate entering M.D-PhD program after taking a break of two years to pay my financial loans. I look forward to becoming a clinical scientist working on infectious diseases related to membrane proteins. Thank you again for your support.”
Shirin Usmani, Senior winner
“As a single mom of a two-year-old, I found being in graduate school while parenting alone presented many difficult obstacles. Though I was committed to my graduate program and able to maintain a 3.99 average, very tight finances made giving anything extra (or sometimes meeting the requirements) almost impossible. The $1000 from ASA allowed me a little more flexibility in covering childcare, which in turn allowed me to contribute more to my education: I was working on a project this past fall investigating health literacy in Latino families in Marin County. “
Ann Widden, Arthur H. Bazell winner (single parent scholarship)
“Receiving the Alumni Scholarship Award assisted me financially to continue with my education and helped me to pay for my books and rent. I will graduate in Spring 2007 and receive my Bachelor's of Science in Child and Youth Development focusing on Families and Youth. This will keep me on the path of pursuing a Master's Degree in Counseling … In the future, I would like to give back to the community what I have received.“
Maria Lupe Gil, Senior winner in Child & Youth Development
