San Francisco, 1936
The newly completed San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opens for traffic. The Bridge is an instant success, helping to relieve the overburdened ferry system that had been transporting more than 40 million people between San Francisco and Oakland each year.

California, 1939
During the Depression, Governor Olsen promises a "New Deal" for California.

United States, 1939
The 1939-1940 New York World's Fair gets under way with a great deal of fanfare but is soon overshadowed by the outbreak of war in Europe.
