Setting up & maintaining a local server

Setting up and maintaining your department's own local server
General Fund departments may use central storage or maintain their own
local server. Non General Fund Departments may not use central services,
but may maintain their own server.
- Identify a 'spare' computer you can use for your WWW server. It can
be a Mac (68030 and up), PC running Windows 3.x, WindowsNT, OS/2, DOS based
machine, or a UNIX based machine.
- Ensure the server has an Ethernet connection
- Install your WWW server software
- Create a Domain Name Service (dns) alias for your server. You can use
an existing IP number/name and add an alias. Or, if the computer has never
been networked before, request a new name and number. To request a name
contact your local subnet coord inator - if you don't know who they are
- send email to net@sfsu.edu. In your
message include where the computer will be located, and your department
name. I recommend using the www.dept.sfsu.edu convention, although you
are free to choose whatever your like, provided it fits the DNS naming
criteria, and has not already been assigned.
- Place the home page files (html, gifs, etc) in your server's WWW space.
- Test by trying to request files from http://www.dept.sfsu.edu or by
using the computer's IP number (http://130.212.10.235).
- Send email to web staff,
informing me of your server name and exactly how you would like to refer
to it. Example: College of Business is at cob.sfsu.edu.
- Leave your server running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, until.....
- Backup your server frequently
