WS_FTP LogoWS_FTP

WS_FTP is a Windows-based application for transferring files between your PC (the local system) and a remote system. If you are using a networked Windows PC on campus, it is possible that WS_FTP is already installed. If not, you can pick up a copy of WS_FTP here.

For assistance, please contact the Help Desk.

This document will teach you how to:

Create a new profile name and connect to your SFSU Internet Account

A profile name is the name of a connection setting which saves all of your personal WS_FTP information. Whenever you use WS_FTP, you would select this profile name so you would not need to reenter connection information everytime. To create a profile nam e,
  1. Start WS_FTP by clicking on the WS_FTP icon. You will see a screen similar to the one below.

  2. In the Session Properties window, click New
Make sure the Anonymous Login box is not checked.

  3. In the 'Profile Name' box, type a profile name. This name could be anything you want.
In the example below, we are using the profile name Web Page

  4. In the 'Host Name/Address' box, type any of the SFSU host names (for example, apollo, orion, taurus - faculty can use host online).
In our example, we are using apollo.sfsu.edu

  5. In the 'Host Type', choose 'Automatic Detect' or UNIX [standard].

  6. In the User ID: field, enter your SFSU Internet Account without the @sfsu.edu
We are using the account webabuse

  7. Click Save or Apply to save the settings

  8. In the Password: field, enter your SFSU E-mail password
Note: Passwords are case sensitive so make sure the CAPS LOCK key is not on. Also note, for security reasons, the password will appear in asterisks (*).

The Session Profile window should look like this (replace 'webabuse' with your SFSU Internet Account name):

  9. Click OK to connect.

If you correctly entered all the information, you will see a window similar to the one below.

Create a directory to store files

Department, faculty, staff, and student Internet Accounts store most files in a directory called public_html. Some files, however, need to be s tored outside of these directories.

If you don't see a directory called public_html under Remote System, use the "Mkdir" button on the Remote System side to create the directory. When you click the "Mkdir" button, you will see the following window. Enter public_html then click OK.

Note: Once you create the public_html directory, you will not need to create it again.

Changing Drives

The directory shown at the top of the Local and Remote System's list boxes indicate the current drive location. You will need to change drive location if the files you want to upload or download are stored on a different drive. For example, if the fi les are stored on a floppy drive (a: or b:) or network drive. In most cases, you will only need to change the drive location on your Local System side.

To change drive location, use the vertical scroll bar (highlighted below) to scroll down the list box until you see a list of disk drives.

On the Windows 95 version, disk drives are indicated by a drive letter (for example, a:, c:, d:) and a disk icon. The default color of the drive is blue. The following picture is an example of how the drives will look:
