WS_FTPWS_FTP is a Windows-based application for transferring files between your PC (the local system) and a remote system. If you are using a networked Windows PC on campus, it is possible that WS_FTP is already installed. If not, you can pick up a copy of WS_FTP here.

This document will teach you how to:

The Session Profile window should look like this (replace 'webabuse' with your SFSU Internet Account name):

If you correctly entered all the information, you will see a window similar to the one below.
You will see files and folders under both the Local and Remote System sides. The Local System contains files and folders on your computer. The Remote System contains files and folders in your SFSU Internet Account.
Department, faculty, staff, and student Internet Accounts store most files in a directory called public_html. Some files, however, need to be s tored outside of these directories.
If you don't see a directory called public_html under Remote System, use the "Mkdir" button on the Remote System side to create the directory. When you click the "Mkdir" button, you will see the following window. Enter public_html then click OK.

Note: Once you create the public_html directory, you will not need to create it again.
The directory shown at the top of the Local and Remote System's list boxes indicate the current drive location. You will need to change drive location if the files you want to upload or download are stored on a different drive. For example, if the fi les are stored on a floppy drive (a: or b:) or network drive. In most cases, you will only need to change the drive location on your Local System side.
To change drive location, use the vertical scroll bar (highlighted below) to scroll down the list box until you see a list of disk drives.

On the Windows 95 version, disk drives are indicated by a drive letter (for example, a:, c:, d:) and a disk icon. The default color of the drive is blue. The following picture is an example of how the drives will look:

Double-click on the appropriate drive.
The current directory path is shown at the top of the Local and Remote System's list boxes. You will need to change directory path if the files you want to upload or download are stored on a different directory.
To move up a directory tree, double click the green arrow -
at the top of the Local or Remote System's list boxes. To move down a directory tree, double-click on the directory you want.
Example of moving up a directory:
On the Local System side, if the directory says:

and you want to be in the c:\ directory, double-click the green arrow (boxed in red above) to move up to the c:\program files directory. Double-click again to get to the c:\ directory.
Example of moving down a directory:
To move down a directory, scroll down the directory list and double-click on the folder you want to open.
WS_FTP will transfer the file to the directory you have open on the right side of the screen.
Note: When downloading HTML files, change the File Transfer Mode to "ASCII". When uploading any other file (.exe, .doc, .gif, .jpg), change the File Transfer Mode to "BINARY".
WS_FTP will transfer the file to the directory you have open on the left side of the screen.
The next time you use WS_FTP, select the Profile Name you created (in this example, we would select 'Web Page') from the Profile Name drop down menu. Your personal connection settings, such as the Host Name/Address and User ID will appear. Enter your password and click OK to connect.
