Safety and Transportation
Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, SF State enjoys the safety
benefits associated with living in a residential area outside of downtown San Francisco.
Additionally, students can feel safe thanks to the many precautions the University has taken
to prevent or reduce crime.
The campus is a generally safe area. University Police officers patrol the campus -- on foot,
on bicycles, and in patrol cars. With the full power to make arrests, these officers enforce
laws dealing with underage drinking, the use of controlled substances, and weapons, which are
not allowed anywhere on campus.
The Campus Alliance for a Risk-free Environment (C.A.R.E.) is a student-security team employed,
trained, and supervised by the University Police Department. All new C.A.R.E. team members receive
Red Cross-sponsored training in CPR and first aid, but their primary responsibility is to provide
personal escorts and additional building security during evening hours. Team members are available
to escort students to and from classrooms, laboratories or offices, to cars or to on-campus housing.
Escorts will even wait with students at their bus stop.
Public Safety has additional information on crime prevention tips and publishes campus
crime statistics annually.
SF State is easily accessible by
public transportation or private vehicle. Keep in mind that
parking lots fill early when the University is in session, so be sure to plan ahead.
